I have a Dell Insprion 28 GB laptop, 17 of which are in use (I have 6.4GB of music which accounts for a lot) I first tried to run a defrag (both windows and Norton system works) last year, and have not yet successfully completed one. I will let it run FOR DAYS and it just gets stuck in a loop on one part or another and can never finish before my patience runs out. Is this normal considering how much of my hard drive I've used up? I thought that there would still be enough free space to complete a defrag...do I need to remove a lot of stuff and THEN do the defrag?
My computer is pretty slow, which is part of the reason I want to defragment the disk which has never been defragmented before! Any other ways to help speed it up would also be appreciated!
Thanks!

Temporarily disable/turn off your AntiVirus program, Norton System Works, System Restore and any other such programs you might have that run in the background and then run defrag. Re-enable those apps when defrag is completed.

If that doesn't work for you try running defrag in Safe Mode.
