View Full Version : Printers in NT4

I work in setups where often several users might use a variety of workstations on an NT network.

When making a change such as attaching a new printer the usual procedure for NT workstations is to log in as Administrator, add the printer and set up any default values required, delete any existing profiles then copy to default user.

This is tedious and can be a source of conflict if the user has decided to make any changes to the desktop, as these are now lost.

Any suggestions?

The FAQ

How can I get the system to add a default printer automatically when a new user logs on for the first time?

is probably the nearest answer to the problem but only deals with new users logging on for the first time. The real problem lies in trying to deal with an existing network where a printer is added or changed.

Some sort of REG file would probably do the trick but has anyone got practical experience of actually doing this sort of thing.

try exporting the reg files from a machine that has the configuration you are looking for.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Print\Monitors\LPR Port\Ports

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Print\Printers\

This has allowed me to add an IP printer. Supposedly you can use A T Scheduler to have the files update automatically. I have not explored this as an option. One thing I haven't figured out is how to have the print object display in NT 4.0. <- Need help any answers???
