I was wondering if it's possible, either via a reg hack or by any other means if I could turn my desktop into an explorer.exe, and have it function exactly as a explorer

Comments and Suggestions Greatly Appreciated.

Thanks

Windows Explorer is pretty much the core of Windows with explorer.exe being the executable file. By 'desktop' do you mean a desktop computer or your background/wallpaper/Desktop? You could set Windows Explorer to automatically open as Windows loads.

Thanks for replying,
well originally I wanted the icons to appear in list form because I rather the space be condensed. However I later decided that the toolbar appearance of 'show no text' and 'use small icons' was more appealing. I guess I'd like to have explorer as the wallpaper? But does that mean there would be two instances of explorer running as the desktop?

As a wallpaper it will only be an image and not Explorer itself.

Perhaps another suitable option will suffice...
All of the items on the desktop are just shortcuts.

Create a folder within My Documents (or wherever) and place any shortcuts you like into that folder.

Now right click on your Taskbar, wave over Toolbars and select New Toolbar, navigate to the Shortcuts folder and select it. Alternately you could simply select the C: drive instead of a Shortcuts folder (but is rather large).

A new Toolbar named "Shortcuts" will appear on your Taskbar. Wave over the left edge of it to turn your cursor into the double arrow and then drag it as far to the right (next to the System tray) as possible.

Now when you click on the double >> symbols it will cascade the menu of shortcuts.

If you don't like the new toolbar then just go to Toolbars again and deselect it.

If you keep it then you can now remove the desktop shortcuts.

I appreciate your feedback,
I actually have utilized several instances of shortcut toolbars for various other projects and agree it would make a nice alternative, but I much rather have classic explorer abilities for the desktop. Thanks again.
