hi was hoping someone might be able to help me out on this...

I would like to clean the url histories in my registry and have done so by using regedit.

however when I do a keyword search on my hd the user.dat and system.dat files still retain the offending urls.

was wondering if anyone new any way to clean these url histories from these files ?

There are plenty of bit of software and reading on the index.dat file cleaning but all seems pointless unless you can clean all the url data from the pc...

would like to avoid a fresh install of my OS

thanks

"however when I do a keyword search on my hd the user.dat and system.dat files still retain the offending urls."

You have my curiosity.
What are you using to find these items within system and user .dats? Are you doing it on DOS or Command prompt?

Otherwise delete your History files containing the specific items.

Try to use software like IE privacy Keeper.. It really cleans!

I am using the Start/find files or folders and using keywords in the 'containing text' field...

the search returns all file with the keyword within, then I am using wordpad to open the file and search again to locate the position of the text.

Hi thanks for the link, had a look but it does not appear to clean the user.dat and system.dat of url's.

point is the user.dat and system.dat still retain all the urls you clear from the index.dat file...

therefore anyone wanting to see what the user has been doing from started apps to browsed sites ignores the index.dat and goes straight for the user.dat or system.dat files...

sounds like the only way to do it is have a clean backup of the user.dat file to replace the normal one with...

- have a check yourself, do a search within the user.dat and open it up in wordpad, you will see every site or app you had on your pc that you think you erased from the index.dat file !

The System.dat and the User.dat are your registry.

I delete my index.dat from the TIF file using a script about every 10 days or so.
I have set my History to retain only 5 days.

I manually delete the History of a single site I visit occasionally after each visit. I also manually delete it's cookie after the visit.

I find no traces of it other than within the Shelliconcache file as I would expect since I have a shortcut to it in my Links bar. This was revealed, as expected, when I used Find's keyword search.

Otherwise it does not exist.

My thinking is that it can only be storing it in two places: The History or the TIF's index.dat.

Try deleting your History and TIF's index.dat and then search again after a restart.
