I got a tweak from WinGuides a long time ago of how to set Windows Explore Start to something other than "My Documents" which is so annoying cause 9 times outta 10 I want something other than my docs.... The tweak was how to set it to open with "My Computer" which is much better for what I usually want to work with...
If sombody out there remembers/knows about this one please give me a hand...
Thanks all, an have a real good one...

Right-clicking Start and choosing Explore opens Windows Explorer in the Start Menu by default, can't be changed.
Right-clicking My Computer, Start menu or Desktop, and choosing Explore opens Windows Explorer in My Computer by default, can't be changed.
You can change the icon for Windows Explorer in Start, All Programs, Accessories by entering different commands in the Target: box, such as:
C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /root,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,C:\,/select
C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /n,/e,D:\
c:\windows\explorer.exe c:\myfoldername
explorer /select,c:\Your Folder
C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /n,/e,C:\
The icon then can be right-clicked and dragged to the Desktop and choose Copy Here. It can also be dragged to the QuickLaunch bar.
You can also open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder you use the most/desire, right-click it and choose Send To and then Desktop [create shortcut].

That really wasn't the "fix" I was looking for having tried all those combinations before... It was a "tweak" in the registry... it pointed explorer at "My Computer" instead of "My Documents" as is the default... Thanks for the help anyway...

Try the item in the adjacent columns to #120 or #255 at <a target="_blank" href=http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm>http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm</a>

Now that was nice!!! It tried to install "code" on my machine... I would like to SEE what's going into my machine before I accept it or not... it might have been what I'm looking for but if it comes up with a download prompt before I have any idea what's happening... well....

If you are not displaying the Status Bar in IE then do activate it in the View menu. Then before clicking on any link in IE you can see what it is you are getting.
You are supposed to Right click on each and select "Save target as".
Once on your hard drive right click on each and select Edit to view it's contents.
Additionally, go to files types in Folder options to change the default action for .reg, .js and .vbs from Open or Merge to Edit to avoid that in the future.
I also highly recommend using <a target="_blank" href=http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/programs.asp?Program=Script%20Sentry>Script Sentry</a>. It's free and runs only when an associated file type is selected to open. It uses no resources.

We're getting closer to getting this thing resolved... After getting the "script" into my machine I executed and the only thing that happened is instead of explorer opening using "My Computer" as the option... My documents has been sorted "under" My Computer... which has no real value or meaning... but we ARE on the right track and I'm very thankful to you for the help...
But... I'm not so sure about this...
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"Userinit"="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\userinit.exe,"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"PersistBrowsers"=dword:00000000
#1 my installation isn't on C: and #2 I haven't the faintest of what 00000000 is in context with my machine...
As I've now gone in and reall seen what it is... I see it's not the solution I want!!! this only sort's it on the desktop... I want: when I click on explorer it opens on "My Computer" instead of "My Documents"... has nothing to do with the sort... I could care less if my docs is above or below My Computer... I just want it to open My Computer...

Just add this:
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e, ::{208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D}
to the TARGET box in Explorer's shortcut...

Yes, you're right, the key what I gave you was for "Network Neighbourhood" instead of "My Computer" ({20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}) /images/forums/icons/crazy.gif...
Nice you sorted it...
About Explorer crashes, download and run <a target="_blank" href=http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip>HijackThis</a> and paste here the results of the scan...

I found the prob.... it was when I was trying to "see" what was in some .zip files... if I open them in their own process I don't crash...
So as I said before I'm a happy camper... and a big thanks for all the help...
