When I try to run regedit or msconfig the window pops up for a split second and goes away. It works fine in safe mode. I've run McAfee and Norton virus scans and nothing was found. I've run multiple spyware programs and nothing was found. The following is my Hijack This log. Please help.

Looks like yo have a few items to deal with. First thing I think you should do is download update and run both SpyBot S&D (http://www.lavasoftusa.com>Adaware</a>) and remove whatever it finds. You should also do an online virus scan with <a target="_blank" href=http://housecall.trendmicro.com/>Housecall</a>. Sometimes Housecall will find things you present AV can miss. If this doesn't remove all the adware, spyware stuff you have on your machine go to "Start/Control Panel/ Add and Remove Programs" and look for any "search or Browser" type programs installed on your machine. If you find them remove them. If you're not sure what they are post it here. After you do this rescan with HJT and post your logfile here.

I have completed the following and still have the problem:
1. Removed the BH0 no name, no file entries
2. Ran Spybot, Ad-Ware se, Spy Sweeper, House call and McAfee virus checker in both regular and safe mode. I deleted everything they found. However, when Spybot runs it finds DSO Exploit. I delete it, run Spybot again and it finds DSO Exploit again and again and again.
3. Deleted everything through Add/Remove programs that looked like it may be a search or browser entry. I've read in some of the other threads like this that Napster may cause a problem. I removed it. I did not remove BigFix, Conexant Softk56 Modem(M) (I use a wireless connection to a router that is connected to a cable modem), one-on-one, view point media player, and Winamp.
Thanks for your help. Following is my latest Hijack This log.

You can ignore DSO Exploit for now. It's a glitch in SpyBot S&D.
I am not sure whether Big Fix has any spyware, I personally wouldn't use it just because of how it works in the background but this is totally up to you. Did it work for you? ;).

Now to your HJT logfile:

It looks like you cleaned out a good amount since your last scan. You still have some things to fix.

Do you know what these are?

C:\Program Files\Belkin Bulldog\upsd.exe

C:\Program Files\Microtek\ScanWizard 5\ScannerFinder.exe

Place checks in the HJT scan unless this is something that you use.

Most all of these contain some sort of spy-adware. You need to decide which ones you want to fix in HJT.
Post a new logfile after fixing and rebooting.

This one bothers me.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1
Possibly nasty. If you do not know the entry '127.0.0.1', delete it.

I also don't think you need eMachine running on your computer unless you are using their applications. We would need msconfig to shut them off to test if it is ok to remove.

Remove this:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

I would like to suggest turning off everything in startup and checking to see if the problem still exists. No msconfig /images/forums/icons/frown.gif

I really believe you have an infection somewhere but I'm just not seeing it.

I've completed the following:

1. R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1
deleted

eMachine entries - I have used their help services. I assume these have been on the machine since it was new. So unless you really think this is the issue I would prefer to not delete them.

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
deleted

2. I went into Safe Mode and msconfig and unchecked everything in the startup tab. I restarted in full mode. Same problem. There were still some entries in the systray. When I went back into Safe Mode/msconfig 5 processes were checked. 3 McAfee processes, winmx and ctfmon.

3. I read in the Hijack This instructions that all startup processes should be checked before running Hijack This. I did this. The first log below is after doing this. When I booted up after doing this a documents window poped up from:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\Microsoft Office.hta
with the message:
TG! ? #_X !c ? @ "\ Dw= I &lt;m _X 8malware was hereh

Note the "malware was here" phrase

4. I have a logon id on this computer for each member that uses the computer. I looked and the hijack logs are different. That would probably be obvious to you. Sorry it took me so long. ;-)
The second log below is from Steffany's id. Can what is going on in another person's startup mess up my startup? Should I post Hijack This logs for every id?

Greg's (the one we have been working with all along, with all processes started) log:

You are both sharing a bad one here. Search this in Google.

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.hta

This one is in Steffany's logfile:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.blazefind.com

When we get your msconfig back up you'll need to shut off alot of the unnessessary startup items you have running. Hopefully we'll get around to that.

Here is the best information I found. I'll try it in the morning. The information states to turn off system restore. Do you know if I need to go into each id on my system and turn it off? Then I presume I need to run hijack on every id and perform the process below. Correct?

This downloader trojan is itself download, via an HTA file (named Microsoft Office.hta and is detected with the current DAT files as VBS/Psyme ) that is believed to be used in conjunction with a recent Microsoft Internet Explorer HTML Help Control Local Zone Security Restriction Bypass Vulnerability exploit.
The exploit is believed to save the file Microsoft Office.hta to the startup directory. Upon reboot, this files downloads a remote file named server.exe, saves it to the local system as c:\malware.exe , and executes the downloaded file. malware.exe is the Downloader-to trojan.
Once run, this trojan adds itself to the Windows XP SP2 authorized applications firewall policy list (as cmsscs ). It also adds an entry for the file that it downloads (C:\WINDOWS\tgbcde\module32.exe as module32 ).
The trojan attempts to terminates firewall processes that may prevent it from functioning:
ccapp.exe
zapro.exe
armor2net.exe
ZAPRO.EXE
amon.exe
MpfService.exe
zonealarm.exe
outpost.exe
firewall.exe
atguard.exe
tpfw.exe
kpf4ss.exe
NPROTECT.EXE
Finally the trojan downloads a file, via HTTP, from 67.15.113.23 and executes it. At the time of this writing, the downloaded file contained a proxy server trojan.
Presence of unexpected entry in Windows XP SP2 authorized application firewall policy list.
Presence of file c:\malware.exe
This trojan is believed to be installed via a recent Microsoft Internet Explorer HTML Help Control Local Zone Security Restriction Bypass Vulnerability exploit.

Windows ME and XP utilize a restore utility that backs up selected files automatically to the C:\_Restore folder. This means that an infected file could be stored there as a backup file, and VirusScan will be unable to delete these files. You must disable the System Restore Utility to remove the infected files from the C:\_Restore folder

Downloader-TO (another Unpatched Help Zone Exploit)

Instructions I will follow:

Please download and install CWShredder.
http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWSInstall.exe

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

You can do it by each user or as Administrator. It's definately a good idea to turn off Restore. It will prevent you from removing certain items not to mention that it's infected anyway. Let me know how you do with the trojan. Let's hope that's it. I would run HJT after each move just to monitor it's progress.

SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
U DA STAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will share with you what I did, what I think actually fixed the problem and then share with you the current HJT logs hoping that you might take one last look as you suggested that other items could be removed.

I:
1. Found the Microsoft office.hta file in the startup folder and deleted it.
2. Turned off restore.
3. Ran HJT under each id
4. Went into Safe mode
5. Ran HJT and saved log for each id. I looked for Microsoft office.hta - NONE of the HJT logs had it in them.
6. Deleted WINMX from every log and deleted Blazefind from Steffany's HJT.
7. Did a file search on hta. There were 5 microsoft office.hta entries in IE type files. I deleted all.
8. Ran CWShredder. Nothing was found.
9. Ran HJT and saved log
10. Ran Spybot, Ad-Ware SE, Adware Spy, Spy Sweeper and McAfee AntiVirus. Spybot found two entries. Nothing was found by the others.
11. Rebotted in normal mode.
12. Reset the system restore
13. tested
All seems to work

I could be wrong but my thought is all I would have had to do is delete all Microsoft office.hta entries, turn off the restore and reboot.

Here are the corrent HJT. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you. :-)

Good work, there is one more file on Steffany's logfile that makes me nervous. If you don't recognize it remove it. Because it's a registry item I would back it up for a while just in case something flips out.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [] c:\WINDOWS\System32\

The thing with the .hta files is that they didn't show up until the last scan. I don't know why!!!I would keep an eye on both of your user accounts to see if any of these things come back. At least now you have the tools to find these nasty things.

SUCCESS AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are hot today!!!

I forgot to tell you in my last post that Steffany still had a System32 window pop up every time she booted up. Deleting the entry you suggested eliminated this issue. THANKS. I made a backup of the registry and created a restore point in case I have problems.

Did you see anything else in either HJT that could be removed?

There were two reasons the problem didn't show up until the end. One is that I had several items unchecked in MSCONFIG. Once I followed the HJT instructions and checked everything in MSCONFIG it showed up. The other thing is that I didn't realize the issue could be in another id on the machine. It wasn't till the end that I sent you Steffany's HJT log.

As you stated I have many tools to help me the next time. I however don't know which HJT entries I can delete and which I need. Is there a web site or ??? that I can use to help me understand what can/should be deleted in HJT? It also looked like there is a restore in HJT. Does it REALLY restore the entry or are you really kind of stuck when you delete something through HJT?

In my research I noted a couple places where people suggested using Firefox instead of IE. Your opinion?

While doing all this work I ran some tools like Registry Mechanic. They found a few hundred "problems". Do I really need to buy one of these type tools, run it and delete the entries it suggests? If so which one do you suggest?

You have been VERY helpful through this whole process. I THANK YOU very much. If you wouldn't mind emailing me at jkhgwh@aol.com and sending me your name and address I would like to send you a small token of my appreciation.

Take care, look forward to your replys to the questions above.

Both your logfiles look pretty clean now. If you want, wait a week and repost a new logfile to see if any of these came got back in to your system.

Here's a tutorial of Hijackthis: <a target="_blank" href=http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=42>click here</a>

Read it over so you can understand what files to be aware of. Be carefull of this program as you may remove nessessary system files and all hell could break loose.

I've never used anything but I.E. so I can't really advise you on the Firefox thing. I know people that use Opera, Netscape and Firefox and seem happy with them but I wouldn't know. Perhaps you can run a post on that. I'm sure there's alot of people that use other browsers out there that can advise you better.

If you removed the last entry in HJT after restarting System Restore you may want to disable it again to delete any bad restore files (and reenable of course).

I appreciate your gesture of appreciation but it is totally unnnessessary. I learn a ton while helping others and enjoy doing it and I recieve alot of help here myself.

BTW, It's snowing like mad here in the North East and I'll be home for a while before the storm ends. If you like I can help you with your msconfig startup programs. Go to start/run/type msinfo32 and hit ok. Expand Software Environment and select startup programs. Go to Edit/select all. Copy and paste the file to notepad and either post it here or send it to me in a private message by clicking on my screen name. Since right click doesn't work here you will use ctrl-c(copy) and ctlr v(paste).

look for a mail flag in the features column on the left after you sign in. Check Private
