I would like to change the licenced name for my copy of word for windows running on Windows XP. Does anyone know how to do this?
(The reason for this is that on registration I accidentally entered my name instead of my girlfriends, whose laptop it is, and now she is furious!)

One thing you can do is go to Tools, Options, and the User Information tab to change the entries there.

You can also try this fix: <a target="_blank" href=http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php?id=32>Change Registered Owner</a>

Bert, That will only change the user information on the documents if I am not mistaken.

Tom, I don't think that will work for Office products.

I have performed a fairly intensive search for what the poster was looking for but do not find it anywhere. The closest I found was using ResourceHacker where I located the Product ID for MS Word. The other info on that same screen is:

A1 D9 A0 96 BF FA CE E2 B2 A6 DB FA CE E2 DA D3
That translates to
¡Ù*–¿úÎⲦÛúÎâÚÓ
(That is just the first line)
I don't see the registered owner info there.

The last line is in Hex and is the Product ID when converted but this can also be found in the registry.

I do not know where the Registered owner info is stored. I tried Google with MS as the site to no avail.

I believe the product will have to be removed completely and correctly and then reinstalled in order to change the Registered Owner name that shows on the MS Word splash screen that has infuriated his firend.

Thanks for all your help! - I tried changing the user information in Tools and it seems to have worked! The name that now flashes up when Word opens is the correct name. It doesn't matter that it hasn't changed the underlying licence as my girlfriend will never know the difference!

Once again, thanks for your quick responses.

PS - I previously tried uninstalling and reinstalling Word but it must keep a log of your registration information because it does not require you to re-register the programme. I'm just thankful that I didn't have to reinstall Windows!

"Bert, That will only change the user information on the documents if I am not mistaken. "

Apparently I am mistaken.

I am using an older version of MS Word and the user information is different than the Registered Owner that appears on the Word Splash screen.
