XP Home -AMD Athlone XP2200 - 512 MB Ram.
I have been through all the suggested remedies for this problem i.e
:-Tools/InternetOptions/Connections/and the various prompts.No result.
I have also checked the registry key: HKEY_CURRENT USER\SOFTWARE\through to \Internet Settings and changed the data value to 01 00 00 00.No result.
Could it be because I have a miscellany of 8 connection names in Internet Settings, all related to Freeserve/Wanadoo my ISP or Alcatel (Broadband)connection modem? (see list below)
Can these be deleted to just two i.e my "Broadband" main connection and a backup connection "Pay as you go"
If so, is it just a case of "Delete" in the Registry
Any help appreciated, this has been going on far too long now.

With a broadband connection you would not be prompted to disconnect. Broadband is an "always on" connection and even when you close IE your Internet connection is still active (it's even active when you shut down your computer).
This is the way it's supposed to be and why it is vital to have a firewall and anti-virus software.

Ok! thanks for the info.
I'm fairly new to all this and I thought that my ISP would penalise me for overlong connection.
Until recently. the disconnect prompt has appeared when closing down from BB.
Any ideas about the number of entries in my Registry,is it OK to leave them?

It would be a good idea to contact your broadband ISP and discuss what settings are needed and what are not.

Hey Tom, I believe DSL is also considered broadband. I know that with Aol DSL service you are promted when signing off from Outlook Express you are asked to sign off the internet connection also. I've been seeing alot of Wanadoo around these forums lately. Is this a cable connection or DSL?

It's DSL.
Originally Freeserve(UK),was taken over by Wanadoo (French origins) in 2004.

Your right, DSL is broadband but I am surprised that some ISP's prompt sign-off. My son, who works for Dell in Austin has DSL thru Verison and it's an always on connection with no prompts for sign-off.
I guess I'm not surprised that AOL would have a sign-off prompt. /images/forums/icons/smile.gif

I'm guessing this is your main question:
<font color=red>"Could it be because I have a miscellany of 8 connection names in Internet Settings, all related to Freeserve/Wanadoo my ISP or Alcatel (Broadband)connection modem? (see list below)
Can these be deleted to just two i.e my "Broadband" main connection and a backup connection "Pay as you go"</font color=red>
You can leave things as they are, or if you wish, uninstall the connections that are not needed. But, do this in Network Connections (Control Panel) > LAN Properties. Don't mess with the registry. Also, be darned sure you know which ones to Uninstall.
