You have a lot more than the "enhance my search popup, as well as the offeroptimizer popup".

I don't know if one pass will get them all or not.

First, print or save (wordpad or notepad) this post so you can refer to it as you need.

Consider the following entries, and decide which ones you are going to fix. After you know, we'll rename a few files in safe mode, then use HJT to fix (delete) the entries you choose:

The following entries should be fixed by HijackThis!
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=

There are more. You are so loaded with (virus/trojan/worm/adware/spyware/malware) type stuff that I'm surprised you are still running. We'll fix a few, then get a new HJT log to see what else needs to be done.

To make sure you can see all hidden files and folders:

Start Windows Explorer
Click on Tools, then Folder Options
Click on the View tab
Click in the circle for "Show hidden folders and files"
Clear the check mark in "Hide extensions for known file types"
Clear the check mark in "Hide protected Operating System files"
Click on "Apply"
Click on "OK"

Next, boot to safe mode by restarting your computer and tapping the F8 key at the first splash screen. Select safe mode.

Next, browse to each of the files listed below and rename the file, changing the ".exe" at the end to ".txt". (These are probable "bad guys" which might be deleted later after we are running well again.)

C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cc3250mt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cdfview5.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\oyiwkk.exe
C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\AutoUpdate.exe
C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\EbatesMoeMoneyMaker1.ex e
C:\Program Files\CxtPls\CxtPls.exe
C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\EbatesMoeMoneyMaker0.ex e

After you have changed these file names, still in safe mode:

Start HJT
Do a scan
put check marks in the appropriate boxes
Click on "Fix Checked"

Terminate HJT
Reboot to normal mode
Run another HJT scan, post your new log.
Let us know what is happening on your system.

Also, what are you using for anti virus and firewall protection. If none, you should get some.

Bruce

Hey Bruce,
I simply can't thank you enough for helping me. I appreciate this soooo much. I did what you said. The only problem was that after changing the exe's to txt's and then going back to put the check marks in HJT, I couldnt find Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\EbatesMoeMoneyMaker1.exe and CxtPls\Cxtpls.exe. I was able to change these two to .txt, but I couldnt find them when I went to "fix checked" in HJT. What's next? :) Thanks again Bruce.

Heres the newest log:

I'm not sure what happened here. It looks like you changed the file names. But it looks like you didn't fix anything using Hijack This. We'll try again.

First, print this post so you can look at while you are in safe mode.

Next, boot to safe mode by restarting your computer and tapping the F8 key at the first splash screen.

When up in safe mode, start HijackThis.
In the lower left, click on "Scan".

Now, for each entry below, click in the box to the left of the entry in HJT to put a check mark in the box:

----------------------------------------------
Now, go back and double check. If I counted right, you should have check marks in 39 boxes.
----------------------------------------------
If you have them (this is the step I think you missed before)

Near the bottom left, click on the box that says:

[FIX CHECKED]

Now, in the lower left, click on "Scan" again, and check to make sure the ones we want to get rid of are gone.

Next step, we're going to make sure that backups were created.

In the lower right of the HJT window, click on the "Config" button, then on the "Backups" button.

Look in the window. There should be entries listed for the ones we deleted. If they are there, close HJT. If there are no entries in the window, let me know.

OK, reboot to normal mode.
Start HJT, do a scan, save the new log.
Post your new log here. There are still several that we need to find and fix.

If you made the fixes this time, your system should be slowly getting better.

Bruce

It's late, and I'm getting tired. I'll give you some quick feedback now, then study your log tomorrow.

First point, I almost missed the fact that you posted a message. When you want to reply to one of my messages, click on the "Reply" button on a message that I posted. That way, I'll get an email of your post, and know when it's time to get back to work.

Next point, I don't think I've ever seen a system with so many viruses, trojans, and worms that was still running. We got rid of 39 entries, and there is still a long way to go. How's your computer running? Is it getting any better?

Next point - I asked before, but you didn't answer:

"Also, what are you using for anti virus and firewall protection. If none, you should get some."

Do you have A/V and Firewall protection? Do you need advice on which to get and where?

I think we have made significant progress. In the next pass, we'll try to clean up a dozen or two of the bad guys that remain.

When I say "appropriate boxes", I mean this: If you want or need to fix a specific problem identified in my response, you should find that entry in your current HJT scan (and only that entry), and put a check mark in only that box. When you have done that for each entry and have no more to check, you should click on "Fix Checked" at the bottom.

Some of the HJT entries are identified as "Nasty", must be fixed. It's appropriate to put a check mark next to that one, and it will be repaired when you click on "Fix Checked".

Some of the HJT entries are identified as "questionable", or "Possible Nasty". These will have some description, such as "To be fixed if the entry 'Ebates ' is unknown" or "Unknown application". I can't know for sure whether these should be fixed or not. You have to look them over, and based on what you know you are using in your computer, you have to decide whether an entry needs to be fixed or not. If you decide a particular entry should be fixed, putting a check mark in the box to the left of that entry is appropriate. If you decide that the entry is something you should keep, putting a check mark in that box is NOT appropriate.

I'll study your latest log in the morning, and get back to you with instructions for the next pass. I expect it will take more than another pass to get things cleaned up, but as we make more corrections and you post new logs, it will get cleaner.

You have at least one problem that I don't know how to fix yet. It has befuddled the experts for a long time, and we may have to try several different approaches before we get it.

Bruce,
Sorry about the Reply issue!
I am shocked to hear that my computer is so infested with viruses, trojans, and worms. I never felt it was running that poorly, other than those annoying offeroptimizer and enhance my search ads (enhance my search is gone but offeroptimizer remains).
As for anti virus and firewall protection. Honestly, I'm just not sure. I always had NortonAntivirus. However, I dont think its working as well anymore, as it always brings up the same results, saying it cant fix it. I've downloaded various other antivirus programs, such as Adaware and Spyware Doctor, but nothing seems to work. Ideally, id love to just remove all of these programs and start over. But I dont even know which program to use.
Im sorry, but I still am just not following you in terms of which boxes are appropriate. For example, the first time, I removed only something like 12 things. After this, I ran the scan again and only checked the ones where in the name, it matched the thing that i deleted. For example, if i deleted something called abc.exe, then I checked the thing called abc.exe. However, when I showed u the new log, u said I needed to check 39 boxes, zero of which made sense to me. For example, you told me to delete Ebates Moe Money Maker. How was I to know that this was an appropriate box to check? and further more, some names have like ABC 01, ABC 02, and ABC 03, where its only appropriate to check ABC 01 and 03. I apologize that I'm not understanding. If possible, its much easier for me when you tell me specifically what to check. I dont see anything on the entries saying Nasty or POssibly Nasty or anything. My continued thank you for this.

Sincerely,
Brett

I'm going to show you what I see. Go to your first post (above), select your log (left click on "Logfile" at the beginning of the log, then, while holding the mouse button down, scroll down until the "O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll" at the bottom of the log is highlighted. Release the mouse button.

The text of the log file is now highlighted. Right click on the highlighted area and click on "copy".

Now, left click on the link below, place your mouse pointer in the box, right click, and click on "Paste".

<a target="_blank" href=http://hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english>HijackThis Log Analyzer</a>

Next, click on "analyze" just below the box where you pasted in the log.

This is an old log, and does not reflect your current status, but it wll help you to understand where we started. You will see that the analyzer marked things in green (usually OK), yellow (questionable, requires study), or red (nasty, must be fixed).

After you look this over, you'll better understand what we were up against. If you want, you can run HJT, get your current log, and use the analyzer to see where we stand now. If you do not want to do this, close the analyzer window.

As to Anti Virus, Norton is good. What version do you have? I'm using Norton 2005, version 11.0.2.4. I've been using Norton for a few years now.

Unfortunately, some virus/trojan/worm programs disable your antivirus protection. The problem then is to first get rid of the bad guys so that it works again. We still have a long way to go.

As to firewall, let's clean up your system as best we can first, then I'll recommend one. It will be a little work to install and configure it, but once working it will prevent future infections for you, and your A/V software will keep your system clean.

I'll try to be more simple and direct in instructions in my next post (probably later tonight), but that will increase the risk that we'll "fix" something that we shouldn't because you need and use it. I'll try to be careful.

Hi Brett, here we go again,

Based on the last log you posted, we're going to fix some more things.

First, print a copy of this post to refer to while you are in safe mode.

Next, boot to safe mode by restarting your computer, and tapping the F8 key at the first splash screen, select safe mode.

I'm going to pick a few fles that I'm pretty sure are virus files, and we'll rename them changing the ".exe" at the end to ".txt". This will keep them from executing when you reboot.

OK, here are the files:

The following program is spyware, and should be removed. Browse to it and rename it changing the ".exe" to ".txt".
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

This is a program which installs itself on the system tray bar, and serves to remind you to backup your files. This is a non-essential process. Browse to it and rename it changing the ".exe" to ".txt".
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe

I'm quite sure this is a virus type program. Browse to it and rename it changing the ".exe" to ".txt".
C:\WINDOWS\system32\oyiwkk.exe

The following file is Adware which updates your system with new adware and pop-ups whenever you are connected to the internet. Browse to it and rename it changing the ".exe" to ".txt".
C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\AutoUpdate.exe

This file is not any normal file found anywhere, and probably is a virus file. Browse to it and rename it changing the ".exe" to ".txt".
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsorc32r.exe

This file is not any normal file found anywhere, and probably is a virus file. Browse to it and rename it changing the ".exe" to ".txt".
C:\WINDOWS\system32\devlogon(3).exe

This one is possibly a hacker, or at least a bad guy. He lives in your Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp folder. Find him and delete him. He's known to renew himself.
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\drp5.tmp\thnall1r. exe

This next one is special. It has stumped many seasoned support guys. We'll try. First, we'll do a search to find how many there are. I think you'll find only one.

In the lower left, click on "Start", then "Search", select "for files and folders".
In the file name box, type "mad.dll" (no quotes).
In the "look in" box, click on the down arrow on the right and select "C" drive (only).
Click on "Search".

When the search is completed, it will have found one or more files titled "mad.dll".

For each one, right click on the file name, and click on "Open containing folder".
In the window which opens, find the mad.dll file, Right click on it, and rename it to mad.txt.

Do that for each mad.dll file that was found. When you finish, there should be no mad.dll files left on your system. They should have all been renamed to mad.txt

----------------------------------
OK, that's eight more files we've found that are bad guys. Now that you've renamed (deleted in one case), we'll use HJT (still in safe mode) to make some corrections.

Start HJT, do a scan.

Put check marks in the following boxes:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3C896D0D-B41F-2E94-8707-115508A1234C} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\jwxg.dll (file missing)

After you have put a check mark in the box for each of those above, click on "Fix Checked".

Shut down HJT.
Reboot to normal mode, get a new HJT log, and post it here.

If my suspicions are correct, the mad.dll file and the "O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll" entries may come back.

Whether they do or not, I think there is still more to do.

Bruce,
I posted my log in the Analyzer and so I think i now have a better idea on what is considered appropriate. However, how can i use this analyzer program when my computer is in safe mode, since I cant go on the internet at this time? Unfortunately, for this round there was a little more trouble:
1. I couldnt find C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\AutoUpdate.exe
2. I couldnt find C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsorc32r.exe
3. I couldnt find C:\WINDOWS\system32\devlogon(3).exe
4. I couldnt find C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\drp5.tmp\thnall1r. exe (actually I couldnt even find C:\DOCUME~1
5. I found one mad.dll, but it would not let me rename it. It said that its currently being used so I didnt have permission to rename it.
6. When putting check marks on the boxes, I couldnt find 04-HKLM\..\Run: [v7tW37V] dsorc32r.exe, the closest thing i could find was 04-HKLM\..\Run: [v7tW37V] mf3xmlc.exe

Hi,
"how can i use this analyzer program when my computer is in safe mode"

You can't. It only works on the Internet.

"there was a little more trouble:"

You have some smart cookies here, and one tough nut to crack (mad.dll). It appears that when you reboot, some of them change names, and we can't find them again. We're going to have to try a different approach.

"I found one mad.dll, but it would not let me rename it."

I was afraid of that. This one will be extremely difficult. We'll probably have to save it for last. In connecton with this, two questions:

Do you know how to build a boot floppy using the Norton A/V software?
Do you know how to boot and run DOS commands in a DOS environment?

"When putting check marks on the boxes, I couldnt find 04-HKLM\..\Run: [v7tW37V] dsorc32r.exe, the closest thing i could find was 04-HKLM\..\Run: [v7tW37V] mf3xmlc.exe "

This is one that changed names on us at a reboot. We'll do a few other things to see what we can clean up, then come back to see what's left in your log.

I'm going to give you three links below to download three adware/spyware/trojan hunters. Create a new folder in your My Documents folder and give it a name such as "Debugging Programs". Download the three free programs, saving them to the folder you just created.

<a target="_blank" href=http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4392.html>Spybot S&D 1.3.1 TX Download</a>

<a target="_blank" href=http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5>Adaware SE Personal Download</a>

<a target="_blank" href=http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html>Download Standalone CW Shredder Only</a>

After you have them, double click the .exe files to install them, then reboot to safe mode and run them one at a time.

With Spybot S&D, start the program, click on "Check for Problems", and fix everything it finds.

With AdAware SE, start the program.
Click on the "Gear" near the upper right.
Click on the "Scanning" button.
Under "Drives, files, and folders", click on "Scan within Archives".
Under "Memory and Registry", click on "Scan my IE Favorites" and "Scan my Hosts file".
Click on "Proceed" to save settings.
Click on the "Scan Now" button.
Fix everything it finds (scan may take a while).

Start CW Shredder, click on "Fix". If it finds anything, CW Shredder will fix it, and you will know. (This one will go pretty fast.)

Reboot to normal mode.

After all this, start HJT, get a new log, and post it here.

We'll look for your next post, your answers to the above questions, and your new log.

Brett, I've been doing some reading. It looks like I made an error in the instructions I gave you about downloading Spybot S&D. Here's a quote:

"SpyBot-Search & Destroy 1.3 Final MUST be installed before this update to work properly. "

Before you download from the link I gave you before, go to this site and download the Spybot S&D final and install it. Then go to the site I gave you before to download the UPDATE to Spybot S&D.

That was fast. I'm impressed. Your log looks much cleaner. I see our old friend mad.dll is still there, with two (or possibly three) registry entries that probably belong to him. It's interesting that the bad files seem to have disappeared, at least for the time being.

How's your computer running now?

Regarding the mad.dll problem - I have to sleep on it and study some more. I know one guy who created a second boot system so he could make corrrections to the first, another guy who created a boot disk and used DOS commands to fix it, and another guy claims he fixed it by making some fairly complicated changes to the registry and performing operations in a particular sequence.

As I said, this one is difficult. I'm not sure I'm smart enough to fix it. Let me think it over, and we'll decide what to try next.

One of the problems is that you can't delete mad.dll while it's in use, and it's in use from the time you boot.

Another problem is the "O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll " entry in your log. It causes recreation of mad.dll if you happen to be able to delete it.

Another problem is the stuff stored in the files that are associated with mad.dll. The files seem to be renamed every time you boot, so are difficult to find.

I'm thinking on the fly here. The problem is to delete mad.dll (which can't be deleted), keep it from being re-created (if you by chance delete it), get rid of it's files (if you can find them), and fix the O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll registry entry, along with the other registry entries for the files that you deleted, and it appears you have to do it all in a single operation (with no reboot till it's done). Piece 'O cake. Let me think on it.

Hey Bruce,
The enhancemysearch popup is gone, and I believe the offeroptimizer popup is gone as well!
Other than that, the computer seems to be running as it was running before (which is why i was surprised to hear how flooded my computer is with problems, as I never throught its performance was that bad!) Talk to you soon!

Hey Bruce,
Ive been keeping my friend up to date with whats going on, and he had an idea about the mad.dll problem. He has something called knoppix, it's a bootable live cd that is by Linux. He said with this cd you can start the computer and a whole different operating system pops up, so you can edit and delete files on your harddrive without running windows. Whats your thoughts?

That's what we're looking for. I've checked. No DOS boot disk that I have found can access the NTFS partitions (except for one, and it didn't have write access, so therefore couldn't be used to delete a file).

The sequence will be important. On the day you plan to do it:
First, you need to run HJT to fix the remaining entries.
Next, you need to reboot to the knoppix CD.
While booted from the CD, you need to browse to and delete the mad.dll file (since it's not running, you should be able to delete it).

If your log hasn't changed, here are the items that need to be fixed before booting from the CD:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [v7tW37V] shikager.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ew26RXZ4i] shesprx3.exe
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll

These are the key ones. If your log has changed since last posted, you might consider a fresh post just before you try the fixes. Good luck with it.
