OS is Windows 2000.
Deleting Temporary Internet Files. I refer to the setting in the General tab of Internet Options, which if you're an Internet Explorer user, you can get to by clicking on Tools, at the top of this window. If you delete all these files by using that button, does it also delete all the installed cookies?
I'm wanting to do a general cleanup but not to destroy the useful cookies I've got on my machine, eg the one that automatically logs me in to this forum.

In the TIF section as you noted there are 3 buttons: Delete Cookies, Delete Files and Settings.
Delete files will not delete cookies, only the Delete cookies button will.

No, Report2, in MY version, there's only TWO buttons in that field - "Delete Files" and "Settings". Im using IE5.5 (5.5.4087.2300), so perhaps there are some differences in this regard?
Which version of IE are you using, Report2? I'm intending to update to IE6 in due course.

I am still relatively certain that it does not delete the cookies as they are in a separate folder than TIF.
I am using IE6sp1.
I fought upgrading from 5.5sp2 because I liked 5.5sp2.
I was forced to upgrade in order to use MS Money.
I like IE6sp1 as it has a few features not found in earlier versions. Particularly it's cookies handling.
I personally find it to be faster than the earlier versions too.
The only thing I didn't like was the Media bar but I disabled that. You might like that but I don't know.

Regardless of which version of IE you are using, if you delete cookies they all get deleted. Unless, of course, you pick through them one by one. /images/forums/icons/smile.gif
I was introduced a couple of years ago to Jason's Cookie Jar a nifty, free app. that permits you to segregate the cookies that hold your settings for specific sites, etc. and delete the remainder.

Yes, Report2, I've been a little hesitant about later having IE6. I use IE5.5 SP2 at present and, on the whole, it works okay. I've heard mixed stories about IE6. Unfortunately, if I want to use SP4 for Win2K from hereon, my understanding is that SP4 automatically installs most of IE6.
As regards my original question, nobody's answered it yet. I've a suspicion that, under IE5.5, using that Delete TIF button DOES delete the cookies also.
Perhaps I'll not bother with clearing my TIFs for now, and instead I'll wait until I've revamped my machine and am using IE6.

I too enjoy using Jason Levine's Cookie Jar.
The two folders in question are C:\Windows\Cookies and
C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files
About once per week I go into DOS and delete my Temporary Internet Files folder. Effectively, completely, removing the folder from my computer.
Using Windows Explorer I find 56 cookie files in my Temporary Internet Files folder of which many were created before my last deletion of my TIF folder.
My C:\Windows\Cookie folder remains intact with 111 cookie files of which many are years old.
Additionally, I have set IE to "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed". (IE Tools, Internet options, Advanced and under the Security section) This is the same as hitting the Delete files button that you are talking about. I have implemented this setting since I had IE5.1.
The bottom line is that deleting the Temporary Internet Files has no effect on Cookies.

In MY current version of Windows (Win2K SP3), there are no such folders as the two you mentioned, Report2.

Yes, your paths will be different on Win2K. I don't have a Win2K machine to check the correct paths but maybe...
C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer...
or
C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings\...
You can search for these two folders too.

No, there's no such path in Win2K. It's C:\WINNT, anyway.
Under Win2K, Internet Explorer and Outlook Express are in separate folders in Program Files, which is a completely separate folder from WINNT.

I am sorry for you that I do not have Win2K so I am unable to tell you the correct paths.
If you don't want to then you won't find the two folders.
Use the Search function. I am positive Win2K has that. /images/forums/icons/smile.gif
