is running fdisk and reformatting hard drive
certain to eradicate any viruses, assuming one
deletes and recreates the primary parrtition?

As long as you reformat and do a clean install you should OK. The only downside would be if one of the apps or personal folders you backed up to reload on your fresh OS contained a virus. You didn't say if your system had a virus. A full virus scan should be done prior to this undertaking.

right..i had forgotten about that possibility.
re virus scan , no viruses picked up although
spybot picks up "dso exploit" on a regular basis.
i had heard that some viruses could hide in my
device cards memories. thats a new one on me.
thank you.

I believe the "dso exploit" always showing in Spybot is a glitch in their software that is supposed to be dealt with in a future version. I just set Spybot to overlook it.
