Hello,

Running Windows 2000 Professional

Some time ago had a problem with Explorer v5.5 which is bundled with OS. Clicking on icon gave error message and application terminated.

At the time I downloaded upgrade to Explorer v6 to see if this cured the problem. Application did not error but I had to uncheck the option "enable 3rd party browsers" in tools in order to make it connect.

This week I had a problem where Explorer would not connect to the Internet. Cable Modem LEDs indicated connection was OK but still not sure if this was the case.

In an attempt to get Explorer working I went into tools and rechecked box "enable 3rd party browsers" to see if this had an effect. This is a restart option and when Windows was back up I clicked Explorer and got the dialogue box:

"Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Turning machine off and on made no difference.

I thought my only course of action was to uninstall Explorer v6 and reinstall. In Add/Remove programs the only option was to go back to the version of Explorer supplied with OS. This worked OK but Explorer would not run (original problem from months ago). Re-applied v6 upgrade.
Upgrade process worked OK but on opening Explorer go the same dialogue box
..... "Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

What have I been able to find out?

I have two user IDs on the PC. Work and Administrator. All the above problems were encountered under the Work ID which I had set to administrator status to install the patch.

When I log in as Administrator I also have an Explorer icon and this connect to the Internet OK.

This leads me to suspect that the Explorer settings for Work are corrupt whilst those for Administrator are OK. I assume (although I don't know) that there is only one instance of Explorer application but each user has personal settings - correct ?

I have seen that happen with a computer that was damaged by spyware. In that case, I deleted the user-profile that would no longer work and re-created it.... then it worked fine.

Hey even i am having this problem
Recently i reinstalled windows, and before installing any application i applied all the service packs and patches. At that time only administrator account was on the system. Then i installed other applications and also installed IE6. Everything ran perfectly fine in administrator account . After all this i created another normal user. Then when i tried running internet explorer in this account it always crashed. I deleted the profile and created a new one but the problem was not solved fully. Now the IE wont crash but it takes time to open up.
This problem is really new to me and this one has come up after i have applied all the patches for win pro.
