Here's another free firewall to consider (you get to use the full feature version for 30 days and after that some features drop out and the resultant version is free for individual users) <a target="_blank" href=http://www.kerio.com/kpf_home.html>Kerio Personal Firewall</a>. It's been around for a number of years and seems to get overlooked what with all the new players in the market. I use it on my laptop (Win98SE) and it gets the job done.

I used to use Zone Alarm but they kept changing the versions requiring yet another update. I found with each update I had to tweak it some more. It seemed with each upgrade it used more and more resources. I then started seeing errors on my Win98SE machine and gave up on it. With great effort I succeeded at uninstalling and removing it.
I have since been using <a target="_blank" href=http://home.comcast.net/~bryconow/pf2.exe>Tiny Personal Firewall</a> 1.4Mb. It serves me well. It is no longer available anywhere that I am aware. When I got the copy it was completely free.
Right click on the above link and select "Save target as" to get a copy of it.
I will take it off of my webspace in a couple of days or when you advise that you got a copy or that you don't want a copy.

It has now been removed from my webspace.

You could try Smoothwall(<a target="_blank" href=http://smoothwall.org>here</a>)
It is a Linux distro that runs on any pc. This way attacks are stopped before they reach your computer. It is said it will run on a 486 even, which you could pick up for dirt cheap from any local computer shop (or sometimes even free, just to get it out from under foot in the shop). You just need the cpu. Use your mouse and keyboard to get it set up, then pull them and let the box sit there and do its thing in silence.
