Hello,
I've been trying to remove IE from my PC for the last 2 weeks but am unable to get rid of it completely. I've used the windows xp program removal feature but it just does not work.
I've tried something called Mutilate file wiper but that too does not seem to work. When I try to 'install' a new copy of IE 5.5 or 6.0 I get the message that it's finding a copy on the PC and is 'unable to continue"!
I sure don't want to erase the HD but I just can't seem to get rid of this copy on my PC! Is there some way to eliminate any trace of IE on my PC????
PLease help is you can!
thank you in advance.

IE is an integral part of the OS. It cannot be removed.

Well, software that requires IE cannot recognize it for proper installation......it's a catch-22!!
Why is it not being recognized? I figured I could remove it and install a clean copy....

Go to Start>> All programs >> Accesseries >> Disk Cleanup. Choose C: >> "More Options" then clean up optional Windows Components. I see an option to remove IE there. I have not tried it personally though so I am not sure if it will work.
That option says "Removes *access* to Internet Explorer...". It doesnt uninstall it....

Oh? Sorry for the wrong info if that's the case... but why does disk cleanup talk about "uninstalling" optional components then? Seems a bit misleading to me...

I am having the same problem. I hope someone here can help...I cannot get my IE to work on WXP home ver 2. It's basically missing. When I try to reinstall it, IE 6.0.2, I get a message that I have a newer version and setup cannot continue. I've tried the add/remove windows components, axing out of the reg., but when I try to delete it from the c:\programs, it says it's in use. By what?
Thanks in advance.

Update, through the registry, I was able to fake WXP to reinstall IE6.0. Unfortunately, that caused all kinds of other problems on the required restart. something along the lines of no path to llass.exe, services.exe, etc. Any help here? I may have the only windows running computer that will not run IE. Glab I have netscape 7.2 and firefox...

If you want to reinstall IE the best way is to do the following:
delete c:\program files\Internet Explorer
(Don't by-pass the recycle bin..)
delete this key from the registry (but BACK IT UP FIRST!) HCLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
Then reinstall IE - Windows won't be detecting any "newer" versions...
Again, BACKUP first.
And as Allen said, You can't remove IE from XP ..it's intertwined..Windows will be very very upset if you try.
Regards,
Chris :)
..if it ain't broke, I'm determined to fix it..
