Hi, this is rather a bizzare crash I've had happen recently and has my IT guy stumped.

From what I gather from trying to look up similar problems on google and forums, it has something to do with my profile or possibly something to do with unregistered services ( according to some).

Basically, what happens is, whenever I run IE (either by clicking the icon, running it from "Run.." on Start Menu, opening a link from outlook express or previewing a page from DreamWeaver, the same error, each and every time :

"Sorry, Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I think it's all tied to my links directory under my profiles favourites.

I use the links bar a lot, and recently copied my favourites to a .zip to send to a friend.

This shouldn't be an issue I guess, but it's the only thing I can think I've done that's out of the ordinary and that might affect IE.

The Links Toolbar no longer works in Explorer windows, but they DO open, unlike IE.

Any help would be greatly apreciated, as I'm designing websites on this machine and I'm a bit scuppered without Internet Explorer!

Cheers
John

Try going to IE, File, Import and Export.
Use the Wizard to import the Favorites from the location where you currently store it.

If that does not fix it then try running an IE Repair.
Someone else will have to advise how to run an IE repair within WinXP because I don't have it.

In Win98 I go to Start, Run, msinfo32, Tools, Internet Explorer Repair Tool. (It might be the same on XP)

Hi Report_2 :)

Thanks for the reply.

I tried exporting my favourites, but my problem is looking more severe, as I think I have destroyed my link between the favorites folder and my user account by deleting the desktop.ini. :p

I can neither import (It won't let you import a folder full of URL shortcuts, only a specially formatted HTML file), nor export (it shows no content for the favourites folder. )

I then tried repairing with msinfo32 , but the option is no longer available on WinXP, or just not present because I don't have sufficient access proveledges.

Could I reconnect the orhpaned Favourites folder, perhaps even create a new, empty one?

thanks again for your help. :)

Cheers

I got I working again by disabling the links bar in Windows Explorer then loading a website from explorer.

It all loads up just fine now, but the favourites menu and the links bar are still comlpetely empty, and if activated, the links menu will crash IE.

Anyone got any ideas?

Will I need to create a new user account?

Cheers
