Internet connection drops out (W98)

Just finished cleaning up after a browser hyjack. Now when I go into IE, the connection lasts for a few minutes than drops out. Modem lights are all running. If I shut down and reboot I can access again, but only for a few minutes before dropout. I have run Adaware, Spybot and AVG. Still no go. I actually reinstalled win98 and IE6, still no go. I don't want to format again. I even loaded Firefox and same thing happens.
Any help would be appreciated.

It was a faulty modem which was replaced by my ISP. I didn't think that this non-technical fix was worth boring anyone with, but I see your point.
