How do I make the text background for my desktop icons transparent ? I have installed my own desktop wallpaper and the text box surrounding all the icons has a blue background. I need the background to go away!!

Right click on My Computer > select Properties > Advanced tab> Performance > Settings > Visual Effects tab > scroll down to Use Drop Shadows for Icon Labels on Desktop > check the box > click Apply.

Unfortunately this did not work.

I found a script that does what I wish, but it works on my laptop only, not the desktop I am trying to have it work on.

The only difference I can discern between the desktop and laptop computers is that the former first loads the normal windows desktop and icons and then switches to the new wallpaper and icons; the laptop only loads the new wallpaper and icons and when running the script eliminates the shadow.

Any other suggestions? How do I eliminate Windows from first loading its desktop wallpaper initially?

sounds like you're using active desktop on your desktop and that's loading a .jpg wallpaper (or some other format than .bmp, doesn't matter).
use a .bmp desktop wallpaper.
you could use some free tool to do the conversion, like "the gimp". i remember windows having an image manipulation tool too (not paint.)
or, try loading the image in your internet explorer (file open), then rightclick it and use the "as wallpaper"-function

I'm rather clueless why it wouldn't remove the box tho...

Is there any way to remove those boxes surround icon text on Win98? I have some neat desktops and it would be nice not to have those boxy labels everywhere...

Not in Win98.

On my Win98 machine the background image I selected has a continuous color behind all of my desktop icons.
Using a color matcher I used it's numbers to change the color of the background to match it and the boxes are no longer seen.

(Thought I would throw that out there)

Another thing that could contribute to this feature not working is whether or not you've locked your desktop icons. Unlocking them will get rid of the background around icon text.

To unlock desktop icons:
Right click directly on the desktop.
Select arrange icons by
Uncheck Lock Web Items on Desktop

Hope this helps.

Think maybe after more than a year she is still having the problem or even has the computer?

No, however if anyone tends to stumble on this forum, there are several resolutions listed to aid them.

Open System Properties in Control Panel, choose the Advanced tab, and click Settings in the Performance section. Turn on the Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop option, and click Ok.:)

One would hope that, after a year and a half, the questioner will see the response.
