After downloading free PestPatrol scan but before the scan could start, DDHELP shut me down again with a different error message, below:
DDHELP caused a general protection fault
in module GDI.EXE at 0001:00001bef.

I found an about.blank file in my history and it seems to stay as first entry - is this a problem that SpyBot or AVG doesn't detect?
Thanks again to the people on this forum who are so helpful.

Have you tried installing the lastest video drivers for your card? Or tried a different card?
GDI is Graphics Device Interface - so most logically, your card or drivers are faulty/outdated.

..if it ain't broke, I'm determined to fix it..
