Having a huge problem here, I am trying to install a hp psc 1200 series printer and when I reach the spot in the install for it to find the drivers--well it says there arent any there. This is a USB printer, I had another installed previous to this one that worked fine. HP says its a problem with my 98SE, Microsoft says its a problem with the printer. I am wondering if I am missing a file, a specific reason why it wont "find" the drivers for the printer. Or maybe I am missing some USB update I cant find...Any information on this would be helpful.

Perhaps you can locate your driver at <a target="_blank" href=http://members.driverguide.com/index.php>DriverGuide.com</a>

That was HP's suggestion, I downloaded it and it did the same thing. The Full Solution Driver didnt fix it though. I have looked at driver.com but since no one can really tell me what the problem is I hesitate to download something that I dont need.

Did you follow the instructions:
Quote:
Instructions for Installation

Download the web package to your desktop.
If you have already installed the software for this device and you are either upgrading or re-installing you will need to disconnect the USB cable from your all-in-one, turn the device off, and then uninstall the software. The previous installation can be removed by running the Uninstall Software program via the START\Programs\Hewlett-Packard menu or via Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel. Please reboot your PC when prompted.
After uninstalling the previous software double click the web package and follow the on screen instructions. Do not plug in the USB cable until you reach the Setup Your Device Now screen. After you plug in the USB cable press the ON button on the front panel to turn your all-in-one on.
After the HP Product Registration window appears you will need to reboot the PC and then delete the web package from your desktop and the temp files located in c:\temp\HP All-in-One Series Web Release.
End Quote

Is it really 166Mb? That must be one heck of a printer!

Maybe this article entitled <a target="_blank" href=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;263218>"General USB Troubleshooting in Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me"</a> will help?

Yes I have completely followed all the instructions, I have install and reinstalled the cd, and the file I dowloaded a minimum of 10 times while talking to the technicans from HP. The printer works fine, I took it from the pc it was installed in (worked fine). It installs fine until you get to the point you are to connect the USB cable and turn on the printer. That works ok, then when the add new hardware wizard attempts to find the drivers it can not. Even when using the add a printer function using the cd, it says that the hardware is not were specified. HP has said I am missing some small file, microsoft says I am not. Well there is a reason the pc cant recognize the hardware and finish the installation process. The full solution driver was a 18 hour download for me as I have dial-up--I have all the instructions from when I installed it on the other pc, I have followed them step by step many many times, I also have the clean-up utility from the HP website and have used that many many times. This has been going on a week now, when I got no solution from hp a friend suggested I come here and use this board. I was hoping that someone here had heard of this before. I am totally up to date on all uprades, drivers, downloads from microsoft.

A few years ago I could easily locate a MS article referring to Windows9x being incompatible with many HP printers and the workaround. I spent 20 minutes looking for that article and can not locate it.

If my memory is good then I think the workaround was to simply create the printer using the wizard but call it something other than a HP printer.

Hopefully someone that does know will come along.
Sometimes you need patience on this particular board especially on the weekends. It is my impression that most only visit this site on the work days.

Thank you for all of your help so far, I will keep checking the board and see if someone posts a solution. After many calls to HP I have also found someone who seems to understand what the problem is, though has no idea at the moment how to correct it. I have been searching for a upgrade to my chipset as the one installed is one that can cause difficulties. There were two at the Intel site and I have downloaded and installed them...to no great success. But Im not giving up, someone will have had this problem before and know the solution. :)

Just a few thoughts.

Is the usb port enabled in the bios settings ?
Did you try the "add a printer" then manually directing windows to find the driver on the cd (have disk option) ?

The printer specs mention it is usb 2.0 compatible.
I have no idea if that means it can or cannot be used on usb 1.0 .

Basicly by installing the drivers manually with add printer the drivers should be there. Just have to figure out which folder they are hiding out in. In your reply you mention it then comes up with "hardware not were specified". That suggests the usb port is not functioning. That could be a incorrect installed usb controller in windows. Try deleting it and reboot to let windows reinstall it. Usb not functioning because its not enabled within the bios. Usb not plugged in " mostly older pc's since the newer ones are soldered on the mobo". Guess the best way to check it is to put another device on that port.

Some progress, have the drivers installed now. Now I am searching for a update for my intel 82801AA chipset--this one seems to be a could cause problems one. I have installed the two downloads intel has infinst_enu.exe and infinst.exe. they did not seem to clean up the problem.

Concerning the drivers by choosing the windows inf file it will install the drivers.

The USB ports are working fine--I had a previous USB printer installed and it worked like a charm. It seems there are issues with the chipset and HP.
