I have tried the above tweak both at home and at work, and it didn't work. (Oddly enough, I was easily able to enable autologon for WinNT even though it requires 3 registry settings instead of just 1 as for Wins9x.) Yes, I created a new string value under the Winlogon folder, and yes, I modified the data to be the default user's password, and I have done this many times at home, and twice at work, but nothing happened!

Thanks!

that particular one is for:
Automatic Logon without Name or Password (Windows 9x)This setting allows Windows clients to logon without entering a user name or password, therefore bypassing the logon box.

Try this one:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon
if there is a binary value called MustBeValidated
and it has a value of 01 00 00 00, change it to 00 00 00 00.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr ent Version\Network\Real Mode Net\AutoLogon
Change the value from 00 00 00 00 to 01 00 00 00. If that key is not there, create it and give it that value.

No luck with this one, either -- probably because it does not even contain the password!

Here's the deal:
I have a two-PC home network - with simple Network cards connected by a single cable - and all I wanna do is eliminate the need for entering the logon for the one PC that now needs to logon. I have Wins98.

(As I said, I was able to enable autologon for an NT workstation at work, and that required three different reg entries, so why is it so hard to enable autologon for Wins98?)

BTW, I even replaced the password in the registry under the Winlogon key (per the Tweak mentioned earlier), but this did not help, and I also tried your suggestion as both a new Key and as a new String value, but nothing happened.)

Regards to all,
B J

I'm fishing here but try Start/Control Panel/Network and make sure that in "Primary Network Logon" that you have opted for Windows Logon and not Client for Microsoft Networks.

Have you tried the other option at http://www.regedit.com/detail/272.html?

Thanks, it worked!

Also, thanks to the others who offered their suggestions; I have been trying for weeks to do this!

(However, since I searched for only autologon, I would never have found this helpful hint number 272, so someone needs to cross-ref the hints.)

(Also, it would help to clarify exactly what each hint means in plain language. For example, what does the hint 125 mean by its title "Automatic Logon without Name or Password (Windows 9X)"? Yes, it does say something about allowing Windows clients to logon without a user name or password, but obviously I did not catch the meaning of this!)

(And speaking of hint 125, it would help to place the operational key [the Winlogon key] above the other key in order to avoid unnecessary confusion, which made me try to place the password under the wrong key. Please bear in mind that we are NOT all reg hackers by any means!)

But at least my suffering is now over, thank goodness for Mr Clausen!

Best to all,
B Jones
PS - even though I did check the "E-mail all replies to my real email address" box, this has yet to happen in any real sense!
