I've been told that you can increase the transfer rate for downloading on IE since I have DSL and can download faster then the ussual 80 kbps that I get on the default downloader. I have a download speed of about 600 kbps and would really like to put it to use. My friend was unsure on how to increase the download cap but said it might have something to do with changing a registry key.

Does anyone know how to increase this without having to use a different download manager?

Perhaps http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/645/ will help.

Perhaps you were already optimized.

http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ (http://www.numion.com/YourSpeed/>http://www.numion.com/YourSpeed/) I get:

Communications 3.3 megabits per second
Storage 403.3 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 2.5 seconds
Subjective rating Awesome

Although I have the ability to get downloads at a rate of +3mb I realize that is the fastest single packet speed I can get.

So, using the speed tester site you should see about 1/10 of your rate of 600kbps and in an actual download you should see about 1/5 of your rate depending on the site you are downloading from.

If you can find a site that actually provides a good and high rate the best you should see is about 120kbps vs your current 80kbps. I suggest testing using a Microsoft download because they always have a high download rate. I don't think you can use a download manager on their site though.

Other than a MS download I find I get around 200kbps on many downloads which is about 2/3 of the best available. These numbers are relative to the numbers you should get and are getting. 80 is ~2/3 of 120.

Maybe you are already optimized.

How crappy can things get?

I am using the same "quality" cable connection as yours and the figure I get is only 10-20% of yours!!!

Foamgod, If true then you should call your cable company to have them check the line going into your dwelling. Sounds like there is room for their improvement.

I have seen many whom do better than my connection on cable.

Do as report_2 suggests and when the cable guy gets to your home ask him to add a signal booster/amplifier to your line.

It is true.

But the technical expertise of the cable company is even less than me. Try this: they needed 3 on-site settings + 2 phone consultations and they still cannot set up my connection properly when I upgraded from 1.5 Mbps to 3. In the end my friend and I figured it out by ourselves.

Every time I call to ask about some modem settings, they destroyed it and once, I had to go without internet connection for 2 weeks. (It was like the end of the world for me) I would say I DARE not trouble them for anything else.

So why can't I change company you might ask - tough luck and theirs is the only cable company in my region.

But on another note, that 2 websites gave me a low rate report. Let's do another test. Download something from the internet and tell me your download speed - the peak, average and minimun. Thanks.

Ok, I uploaded the installer for Tiny Personal Firewall program. It is 1.35Mb in size.

Just right click and select "Save target as" on THIS LINK.

Of course that is a Comcast server and I am on Comcast so mine should be better.

Using the Download Dialog box:
1.35Mb in 5 Seconds
Transfer rate: 276 kbps

Using Net Meter I got:
Peak: 320.5 kb/s
Avg: 68

Using BandWidth Analyzer I got 2,957 kbps.

Let me know when you are done so I can remove it from my webspace by posting your results.

Using normal download, mine's 30-40 KB/s. You said yours is 276 kbps - are you referring to bits? Mine is in byte (thought that's the default). But if yours is also in byte, then you can see how slow mine is.
