Can't rename folders

After creating a new folder on my desktop, I can't rename it. I keep getting an "Illegal OPeration has occurred and Explorer will be shutdown. Explorer caused at exception at 03H in Module Kernel32.dll at 0157.bff76701." Could someone help me decipher this so I don't have to reformat.
