Hi, I recently re-installed Win98 but there is an error message that says that some .vxd files (vnetsup.vxd., vredir.vxd, dfs.vxd) are missing. I have downloaded those missing files but I'm not sure where they belong on the system. Someone mentioned to me that they belong in the windows/system folder. Is that true? Also, how can you make system files visible?

Those files do go in C:\Windows\System.

In Windows Explorer go to Tools, Folder Options, View, and make some changes there as needed. I always like to view the Known Extensions and sometimes want to view System files.

Just reinstall the network components...

Ok, I placed those files in the proper folder but now I get this message:

Unable to load the dynamic link library:

msnp32.dll

The system cannot find the file specified.

Some or all of the following feature is not available:

Microsoft Network

I checked Microsoft.com and it says I should extract a new copy of the Msnp32.dll file from the Windows installation media. I tried but I can't find msnp32.dll on the CD. What should I do? What did I do wrong?

Also, if Mono is right and I should just reinstall the network components, how would I go about reinstalling just the network components?

The file is located in NET7.CAB in the Win98 folder in both Win98 and Win98SE CD. You can use SFC in the RUN box to extract a single file or to check for missing/corrupted files.

What folder do I extract the net7.cab to?

I'd let SFC do it, it knows where they go.
