Hi,
Im running W98 on a Compaq 2230. The problem is that the machine was originally designed for W95 and so Compaq (now HP) do not support W98 on the machine.
The machine crashed recently and I had to re-install Windows. Everything is back to work now except the colours which are stuck at 16 Colours and 600 x 800 (I think) resolution.
The reason this has happened is because the graphics driver and sound driver have screwed up.
I was given a driver once before but the problem is that it was lost in the reinstall.
I need to get this machine up and running soon as I am starting a night class.
Does anyone know what graphics drivers I need to run W98 on a Compaq Presario 2230?
I know it can be be done as it was done before, but I have lost the driver number.
Please can some one hlpe me or point me towards someone who can help
Cheers,
Dave.

<a target="_blank" href=http://www.video-drivers.com/drivers/119/119149.htm>http://www.video-drivers.com/drivers/119/119149.htm</a> would appear to be the one to use but I'll leave that up to you.

Using tools you already have use the instructions on how to use Hyperterminal found at <a target="_blank" href=http://www.56k.com/terminal/hyper.shtml>http://www.56k.com/terminal/hyper.shtml</a> to ID your modem. (ATI3 command)

"It can be found in Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> HyperTerminal."
Actually it can be found at
It can be found in Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> HyperTerminal.
If still not found then it was not originally installed.
Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup tab. There you should find "Communications" as one of the items. Under this item I have only install 6 of 9 available items.
You will need your Win98CD or it's Win98 folder to install these items.

Hi,
The modem seems to be stuffed.
I took off the cover and the side id's it as a Compaq series 204 High speed fax modem.
However, I tried Hyperterminal and could not get it to work. It kept asking my to install the driver before it would work.
Belarc could not find the modem either.
What is going on. I think I need to get the driver fro this machine, but I'm having trouble finding anything on Driverguide that seems to suite.
Any further advice or help?
Thanks,
Dave

Try the Zip version of <a target="_blank" href=http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=3>Everest Free Home edition</a>.
Just unzip it to an empty folder and run it's .exe file. No installation required.
I have not tried this program but understand it IDs hardware without the driver being installed.
I am running out of ideas.

read's the id of the chip. Manufacturer and sub chipset actually used.
