For the past 2 months, I have been experiencing a number of constant errors using Windows 98. Almost at random, a SYSTRAY INVALID PAGE FAULT error will appear. This occurs at no specific time and it happens when the computer is idle and/or when I'm working on it. After I hit CLOSE on that error box, instantly an EXPLORER INVALID PAGE FAULT error will appear. (Below is the exact error message) After I hit CLOSE again, my desktop icons disappear for about 20-30 seconds and the computer basically "freezes up." Eventually the computer will begin to "unlock" and I can continue to use it. However, all programs within the SYSTRAY have now closed and cannot be restarted. I must restart the entire computer in order to utilize those programs again - very frustrating.

I've tried to troubleshoot this problem in a variety of ways. I have uninstalled and re-installed common programs in thinking that there could be corruption within those programs causing the error. I also use Norton System Works for Virus Protection, Registry Management, Optimization, Clean-up, etc. I have run every utility within that program to "fix" any relevant problem, however with no success. It has been suggested that Spyware could be the cause of these errors. In response to that concern, I have used Ad-Aware 6 and Spybot: Search and Destroy to locate and remove any possible Spyware. To fix any registry problems, I have also purchased and used Registry Mechanic to further discover the problem. However, these actions have not led to any solution thus far. I would greatly appreciate any help and/or direction in resolving this problem.

Based on all the continuous problems you are experiencing it would be a good idea to back-up all your personal files, downloaded apps, etc. and re-install W98 (clean install).

It sounds like a problem of overheating of the processor or bad memory chips or other hardware related problem...

I did re-install Windows 98 about 7 months ago b/c of the same problem....I guess I'm trying to uncover the roots of the problem w/o having to do that again. Thanks for the input - Any other thoughts?

There is a "clicking" sound that occurs every now and then. Could that be a signal of a hardware issue which could be causing this problem? Thanks...

Definitely. Is the clicking sound coming from your speakers? Or your computer itself?

The sound comes from the computer itself - kind of like a "re-set" clicking sound....if that makes sense. I don't notice any difference in performance when the sound occurs - any lock up or stalling. Happens on a random basis. Thanks for your thoughts.
