I accidently deleted a registry setting when trying to remove some adware, didn't have a backup, and now have a problem that is common to several programs.
I actually think I deleted a folder, not just a file.
The problem is affecting the mouse commands in EI 6, Outlook Express, and on the desk top. I cannot do the right click, open new window command. But other right click functions are fine.
When on a web page, sometimes a direct click on a link does not open the window, sometimes it does.
When in Outlook express, I cannot click on a link and go to the web page.
Also, Ive' lost the ability to drag and relocate icons on my desk top.
Would appreciate any suggestions in tracking down the lost setting so I can try to import a registry setting from someone running the same OS.
I have tried the scanreg/restore, but had already rebooted several times prior so had lost a proper "good" reboot.
Any direction or suggestion would be appreciated.

" have tried the scanreg/restore, but had already rebooted several times prior so had lost a proper "good" reboot."

Had tried or eliminated the thought of trying due to your understanding of how it worked with the backups?

The backups that are saved by Windows are the first good boot of each day. So, if you rebooted several times in a single day then that will have no effect on the previous backups.
The "bad" ones are marked as Bad ("RBBAD.cab versus RB001.cab, RB002-RB005.cab).
They are found in C:\Windows\Sysbckup.

So, if you deleted the registry folder today then you should be able to restore yesterday's good backup.

Also, AdAware creates the backup if you have previously selected the option to do so.
Take a look in AdAware to see if you have it available to restore.

It appears that I have a good file in sysbackup but not sure how to restore from there.
I did use the registry checker, but found no problem, but it did say that a missing file would not be fixed.
When I open the file it brings up a power archiver program. Do I extract with this?

You can't restore from there.

Go to Start, Shut Down, Restart in MS-DOS Mode.
At the C:> prompt type
scanreg /restore
Hit Enter

The list of backups should appear.
If one of them is bad then select one that is not marked as bad.
Go for the one closest to today's date.

If there are no good backups listed within scanreg /restore screen then go back into windows and delete or move the bad backups in the C:\Windows\sysbckup folder.

You want scanreg /restore to be able to select a good backup from that folder and it will only list the last five dated closest to today's date.
