i was over at a friend's house yesterday fixing her computer. after getting rid of a lot of spyware and viruses, i went to windows update and installed the internet explorer 6 update. after installing, i restarted and was taken to the winme splash screen. after about 30 mins, it still hadn't come up. i restarted and chose to boot up with step by step confirmation. after choosing what i want started up, it started saving new settings....and got stuck on there again. after about 2 hours it was finished and booted up windows. when windows finally came up, i got an error that explorer.exe couldn't start up, and that i needed to reinstall windows, and a 'could not find dll file comctl32.dll' came up. i then took a copy of comctl32.dll from my windows 98 cd and put it into the system\ folder. that got rid of the error messages, but now when it loads up windows it never finishes loading. all i ever get is a blue background and my mouse. nothing else ever comes up. without error messages, i have no idea what to try next. i would really appreciate any help since this isn't even my computer and i want to get it fixed as soon as possible.
