My computer has been full of non working programs and junk that i cant get rid of, to top it off it no longer plays any media files, infact its just about stopped working. the best idea i came up with (short of throwing it out of the nearest window) was to reformat the hard drive, but i'm even having problems doing that. i've probably been going round this all the wrong ways.

i open MSDOS promt from the startup menu, type in 'format c:' it then warns me that all data on c: will be lost do i want to procede, i click Y and it says 'drive c: is curently in use by another process. aborting format'.

i've taken the network cable out and i've unplugged everything but the monitor, mouse and keyboard.
all of my files are backed up on another computer via the network, so basically all thats left on my computer is a lot of programs that have cesed to work.

any ideas as to what i'm doing wrong?

That is the problem, the Operating System will not allow itself to be killed. If you have a WinME boot floppy disk you can boot to it and then run FORMAT from the A: prompt - FORMAT C: or FORMAT /U C: if not wanting to save unformat information.
