I am having problems with DLL errors on fresh Windows 98se insallations on my PC(I first tried XP Pro and it crashed in the middle of setup). I started right from the beginning with Fdisk and format. The 98 installion goes in with no problem. When I try to operate with the system I get "explore executed an invalid instruction in module COMCTL32.dll at 0167:bfe 974fd" error and it shuts down whatever I try to do. I also got other DLL errors. This seems like a virus but there's no way unless it can get into the chipsets or Cmos.

I've tried swapping out memory sticks, checked the IP and eventially removed any internet access, I cleared the Cmos many times.
I changed Video and Sound cards all with no solution.

Can anyone help with this solution?

if it is consistant at that memory address and you are 100% sure you haven't accidently put the same bad memory stick back and you have consistantly gotten the same error it could be a bad connection on the memory slot or a bad trace on the mobo. Hope not for you, but... maybe try cleaning the slots and memory contacts.

Hi JL_COG, thanks for your responce. I'll have a look at the contacts. Hopefully that will fix it. I also had Mobo suspicions and also hope that it's not the problem. I put this machine aside to mess with another one. Maybe it's time to pull it back out.
