Hi, got a strange one here: one of my users set their desktop wallpaper to a family photo. They then changed it to another family photo, and although eventually the correct wallpaper shows, during the login process, the old wallpaper shows until the desktop and all apps in the system tray have finished loading. The standard blue background shows until the user commences the login process.

I noticed in C:\documents & settings\application data\internet explorer that a file called Internet Explorer Desktop.bmp was there, and it was the old wallpaper image. I tried deleting this file & rebooting but it just reappeared. I searched the registry and under HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-132581016-1400459815-1478062314-4338\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\General there was a key called BackupWallpaper which pointed to this file. I editied the key to remove any reference to this file and rebooted. The old wallpaper did not appear anymore, but I had to reset the wallpaper to the new photo as I just got the blue default Windows 2000 background.

Can anyone explain how this BMP file is created and how this problem can be avoided in future.

This is not directly to the question in your last sentence but I have seen the problem/issue solved by putting an image in the same folder/subfolder as the default Windows background/wallpaper images, i.e. C:\WINNT on my Win2000. Seems Windows reads the default folder before getting to the folder and image that is set in the Registry for 'custom' images. Bitmaps .bmp work a bit better than other formats.

I have seen that before, I have actually done it on purpose. I bet the first image is a bitmap file and the second one is a jpg file. If you go to that PC and turn off active desktop the image should change to the first picture. Set your desktop to background to none of to the second picture, the one you want, if it's a bitmap too. Then turn the active desktop back on.
