We have a strange problem that is happening randomly where a user will open an Excel spreadsheet and be working on it and another user will open the same file with no "notify" or "open as read only" messages. When the first user tries to save their changes, they get a write error. The first user is running Windows 2000 Pro and the second user is running Windows XP Pro. The file server is running Windows 2000 Server. We're only seeing this on Excel files, so far, but that's the main filetype that's shared on our network, so that could be why. No one is using offline files, so that's not an issue. Also, I believe that both users are opening the file via Windows Explorer or by going through "My Computer", rather than by opening Excel first and doing a File/Open. Any help on this would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks.

I had the same problem there is a new open for sharing workbooks in Excel 2003. See this link. http://office.microsoft.com/assistance/preview.aspx?AssetID=HP052025951033&CTT=8&Origin=EC011081751033&Product=xl2003

Or go to Tools - Share Workbook and uncheck the "Allow changes . . " checkbox to work as earlier version of Excel. If you leave it checked then the 2nd instance to be saved will either get a message about the workbook being updated or will get a dialog box to choose which changes to except if the changes are in conflict with each other.
