i am trying to run an old DOS game on windows xp, titled "Star Trek: The Next Generation: A Final Unity". i had a lot of fun with it in the past, and would like to get it to work again, if i can. winXP runs the installer, but says that 30 buffers are required, but none are detected. i found out which file to edit to apparently get more buffers, but that hasn't worked. any suggestions?

Have you tried running XP's Compatibility Wizard? It's on the All Programs menu under Accessories.

If it is a true dos program and has to run in a dos eviroment you will likely never get it to run under XP. If it's an old win 95 or 98 program, compatibility mode should work. I've used it to play games like Myst and Riven.

PC performance buffs have long measured hardware advances using a few simple metrics: Is it faster? Is it bigger? Does it have more blinky lights?
