I have 768 megs of ram in my Compaq 2190 laptop. For some reason, if I open the task manager as soon as booting is complete and I look at the performance tab, I notice that the page file has almost 200 megs of stuff in it already, but my free amount of physical RAM is around 500 megs. Why isn't windows using the physical memory first? It seems like this is really affecting performance. Is there a way to fix this?

XP does use ram before virtual memory, but that does not preclude it from paging certain data if and when it sees fit. What you are seeing is perfectly normal.
