I recently have the same problems, but my icons where there but all white, when i removed files from my desktop (from the folders on my desktop), they return quicker, but still they are slow showing.
My brother said that when he had more than 30.000 files on his windows drive it happens to him also.
The problem i now sometimes i have is that my icons have another icon, not all of them just one, it is very difficult to return them to normal, but after trying it is normal again...very strange
Your icon cache is corrupt. Here is the instructions from Microsoft:
To re-create the cache file for desktop objects:
At a command prompt, change to the %SystemRoot% folder.
Type attrib -h shelliconcache, and then press ENTER.
Type del shelliconcache, and then press ENTER.
Click Start, click Log Off Username (where Username is the name you used to log on), and then click Yes.
Log back on to your computer.

Is this a reply to my problem or to the first problem posted here...anyway it worked for me, when my desktop starts, my icons are there already...thanks !!!
It was a reply to your problem.... It might fix the first problem too, but I am not familiar with Win2K problems.
