Hi,

Only got ISDN 9 months ago and now I have ADSL finally
available, and being installed next Wednesday.

There's 2 machines at home. A 98se desktop and an XP (H)
laptop (primary machine), both using wireless to connect to
the net via an SMC router (SMC7004AWBR) to an NT1
modem. No problems. Toot sweet.

Received my Speedtouch 530 ADSL modem a few days back
and I -think- I can make it all come together but just need others'
experience to guide me please.

My concern is .. what is the correct order of events here once the
Tech has left and we're ready to roll? My take on it is this...

1 - Physically unplug the NT1

2 - Power up, then Un-install/Remove the NT1 modem and driver
then shut down again.

3 - Attach cable from wall socket to Speedtouch.

4 - Attach the Speedtouch to the Router (and pray the router is
compatible enough to recognise this device - I know some routers
have modem identification issues) and power up laptop.

5 - Run the Bigpond software install.

6 - Alter the router sw to now point to the new device and mode.

(speaking to a Telstra support bod they said maybe first install the
modem directly onto the machine, then once it sees it, then power
down and connect it to the Router. That actually makes more sense
and I will probably go that way).

Here I'm getting a little lost and could really use a hand. If anybody
has been through this or similar recently, I'd really appreciate it.

Reading some stuff at Oz Cableguy I sense I should make the modem
a bridge (which sounds simple enough when reading the howto) but
the Telstra support tech said I should make the current router a bridge.

I've checked the manual (not the sw as I'm not at home currently) and
this doesn't appear to be an option in the SMC router. Besides, I have it
working tickety-boo thank you and am loathe to alter it. Changing the
new modem sounds the go. Yes??

Thanks in advance for any insights.

cheers

Kim
