after installing some sofwares, the last one EAC (exact audio copy) that required also a driver to be downloaded from adaptec (ASPI) I am having problems starting up the computer.
I am getting messages like "one of the disc needs to to be checked for consistency" "type of file system NTFS"
Also Registry Recovery "one of the files containing the system's registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successfull"
I seem to have these messages every time I turn on the PC.
The last time I had c:\windows\system32 is currupted and unreadable. Pls run the CHKDSK utility (I have been asked before to do this)
I am not sure I want to run the CHKDSK (would it rename some files ?).
The system re-booted a few times on his own until I logged on using a different user.
Any suggestion on this ? should I delete some softwares or run CHKDSK ? I think the problem is with the driver I downloaded and tried to install.
Any help is very appreciated.

Running CHKDSK shouldn't hurt anything, but I don't think it will fix what you say is going on.

Can you pinpoint which recently installed program seemed to cause the problems? If you can, uninstall it and see how your system reacts. Do this for each one you installed.

If that does not help, you may need to to a clean install of XP. Backup (off system) all downloaded programs, email addresses and email, Internet Favorites (note: Email Saver Xe will handle email & Internet Favorites - I just had occasion to use it and it's awesome) personal documents, etc. and head to the ElderGeek for step by step details and pictures on how to do a clean install ... look for link on left side bar.
