I have a similar problem to Rascaluk's...but worse.

okay: I've got an RV with a MotoSAT Satellite Internet Connection. the Satellite transceiver connects via USB to my WinXP laptop. I then want to connect my Linksys 802.11b to this PC via LAN card, and have it share the Satellite Internet Connection to any laptops nearby. (this is for a film crew, different locations every week, etc..)

one potential problem is all the film industry people use Macintosh Powerbooks and other Apple Laptops. this means that Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing doesn't really help much.

I've tried setting the Linksys as a Router, and as a Gateway...no luck on either.

if i could just get the Linksys to recieve an IP from the Laptop, that would be great, but how do i go about doing this?

thanks

The easiest way is to connect your transceiver to the uplink on the Linksys with a Cat-5 cable and use it as a router.

the Satellite Transceiver doesn't have a cat-5 port. the only way to connect it is via USB to a special adapter that comes with the system. also, there's special software that controls the dish that has to be on the connected computer. otherwise yeah, it would be easiest to connect it directly to the router.
no such luck

OK.... then connect the Linksys uplink port to the computer's network port using a cross-over cable. Use the linksys as a router to your computer's network sharing service.

that doesn't work either:

Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing requires configuration on the client side, and doesn't support Macintosh.

also, the router will not accept an IP address without NAT...

my best idea so far is i'm going to run a simple DHCP on the WinXP machine.

if anyone else has an idea, lemme know
