Save as dialogue box (WXP-Pro)

I really need to change the default view when I use the File->Open and File->'Save as' dialogue boxes. It defaults to thumbnail view and as the image files I have in some folders are v.large my apps are freezing while windows tries to generate a thumbnail. Is there a tweak I can use to make these dialogue boxes default to list or detailed view?

I am not using WinXP but in Win98 when the Save As dialog box is open at the top right hand side is the buttons to change the view to List or Details.

I suspect, but don't know, it will remember your setting if your Folder options are also set to remember each folder view settings.

I have tried several times with "Remember" on and off. No change. In win98 I had a similar problem, the open dialogue box (again in PhotoShop) was displaying everything in reverse alphbetical. In the end I put a copy of my user.dat on the offending PC and what resolved it. So it is somewhere in the user's profile.
