Can anyone suggest a forum for really, really dumb registry questions? I have tried to uninstall Logitech Desktop Messenger but I keep receiving an error message "Missing File- C:\Windows\TEMP
Logitech will not help and I want to clean my system of this stuff. I have used RegSeeker to identify 16 instances of LDM
46 instances of Desktop Messenger
and 179 instances of Backweb
I have read that it might be better, at first to rename the entries rather than delete them. If this is correct, would it be feasible to export the registry, rename the entries (Find/Replace) in word and then import the registry back? If this is not the right forum for dump questions just tell me. I have a pretty thick skin.
Have you tried creating the directory C:\windows\temp ?

Yes, I did give it a try but it did not work. This was after scanning and defragging the disk. I can see why Logitech will not help. They don't know how to get rid of their software either.

Try going to Start, Run, msconfig, Startup tab.
Look for any entry relating to "Desktop Messenger" and if found remove the Check next to it to stop your startup from looking for it's files.
Click Apply and Ok. Follow the prompts.

Thanks report_2. I do keep it unchecked but I am bound and determined to get Logitech Desktop Messenger and Backweb completely out of my pc.

Was it in msconfig?
It may be the only remnant.
You can remove it from msconfig at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run-
or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices-
Otherwise, did you find it anywhere else within msconfig's tabs such as win.ini, Windows, Run?

As far as I can tell it is just in Msconfig. I can uncheck it but the next time I boot up it is checked again. As far as editing the registry, do I delete the entire key or just the reference to LDM and Desktop Messenger?

Re: Editing the registry.
It depends; if the folder is unique to the program then you can delete the folder.
If the key is contained in a folder with others that are unrelated then just teh key should be deleted.
In either case you always want to click on the folder to highlight/select it, go to Registry, Export to save a copy before deleting it.
If things get worse as a result of the deletion then you can simply doubleclick on the saved .reg file to merge it back into the registry.
Of course, there is always the scanreg /restore command that can be run from within DOS but that is the entire registry and not just a single key or folder of keys.
Re: Unchecking and reappearing.
I would suggest that it is being reentered by another key or perhaps one of those other tabs in msconfig that I mentioned earlier.
If still no joy then I would recommend reinstalling it but using a third party application such as or <a target="_blank" href=http://pascal.oudot.free.fr/telechar/logs/inctrl5.exe >InCtrl5 (http://www.simtel.net/product.php?id=61416>Total).
I have not tried Total Uninstaller but understand it is good.
I do use InCtrl5 as it records all of the files and registry keys that are installed that you can view and completely remove at your will.
I understand that Total Uninstaller has a one button removal tool for programs installed using it.

Thanks report_2. I have tried reinstalling the software from their disk and I received the same Missing file error message as when trying to uninstall it. Can you recommend a web site that explains, in detail, just how to change park of a registry key?

"just how to change park of a registry key?"
I know of no sites but that is really quite simple.
In the right hand pane you can right click on the dword and select modify.
Make the changes and click Ok.
Of course, back up the key first as explained earlier.
When you reinstalled the program from their disk did you use one of those third party applications to monitor/record the installation?
