Hi, hope somebody can help. I'm not a total network novice but this has me beat.

I have a wireless network at home and it works fine. Access point attached to main PC which works fine so I can use my PDA with wireless card anywhere, plus I have my Xbox wirelessly networked to it too.

Just got a wireless card from my girlfriend's new laptop. Card installs fine, detects my network and has a good signal strength but can I get it to access the net through my main PC.. alas no...

However, if I take the card out and hard connect it with ethernet cable, fine no probs my PC serves it the correct IP in the 192.168 range and it's good to go.

However with the wireless card in it;s getting a 169.x.x.x. IP...

I've tried disabling the onboard laptop LAN, makes no difference. I've also tried assigning the correct IP range and subnet to the wireless card. Makes o odds?

Anyone got a clue? Any help greatly appreciated.

Paul

169.xxxx sounds like the default address you get when you have not received your address from the DHCP Server on your router.

When I get this, I use WINIPCFG.exe (from DOS) and release/renew my IP address from the DHCP server. HOWEVER, I'm using W98se. This function is performed under different names with other operating systems.

You r post would suggest to me that you are not using a router.

In this case you need to enable Internet Connection Sharing. so that the other wireless devices are are to access the internet.

By enabling this, you should be also setting up your pcs for networking, and a dhcp server will be setup on your main pc to enable other computers to connect and share resouces.

Have you assigned the correct wireless channel to the new lan card?

Hi rascaluk.
I've got the same problem with a laptop that does not received IP from my wireless dhcp router.
further, I have another laptop and he receive his address from the dhcp, as well as my wired pc connected to the router.
I've tested my PCMCIA wireless card (Sitecom) on another pc on another wireless network, and all was working.
Did you have a solution ? maybe can I use it for myself!
thanks
