Just a bit of advice, I've just started overclocking and want to see what the max voltage I can safely send to my CPU as Ive been told that this will help increase my FSB speed, here's my setup -

Asus A7V600 (KT600 chipset) Motherboard
Athlon XP 2400+
512MB 2700 Samsung RAM
Radeo 9800 Pro
450W Power Supply

Initially, the FSB was set to 133/33 in the BIOS, this gave me a CPU speed of 1.99GHz, I've took it step by step to 149/33 (anything above this and the PC won't start), this gives me a speed of 2.23GHz. However, as stated above, I've been told that if I increase the voltage going to CPU, I can overclock even further. the current voltage is 1.650V. What can I safely increase this to so I don't damage the CPU?

you should only increase the voltage in small increments. There is no maximum as such it depends on your individual CPU - there are wide differences between the same product types.

Watch all the time for the enemy - overheating. Monitor CPU temps constantly. You may need to upgrade your CPU fan and general case cooling if you intend to try for the max increase in FSB speed. Stop whenever your machine seems unstable. Hope this helps and "good luck"

Superb, thanks for the info. I got software with the MB that monitors CPU temp, after a good hour of Farcry it sits at around 46 degrees.

My case has plenty of fans so that shouldn't be a problem and my next buy was a decent heatsink and fan.

Again, thanks for the info.

I would also suggest you upgrade your processor... The 2400 was on the older AMD core, and has a lower bus speed... The 2500+ has a 166Mhz bus, and can see a lot more for OCing... But like Rich said... WATCH YOUR HEAT!!! The higher bus speed means more heat.

Anyone recommend a decent heatsink and fan? I was thinking the thermalrite SP-97 or the Coolermaster Aero 7+

If I move up to a 2500+, am i going to see a massive increase in overclocking performance?

Cheers for all the help!

I have the Swiftech MCX6400-V with just a low speed/noise fan... my CPU stays around 35C while Oc'd to a 3200+ (it's the 2500 with the barton core)

That looks pretty sweet, how much does it weigh or does it clip on to the MB as opposed to the ZIF zocket?
