Download tclock (it's free). You can use it to change the START button text as well as picture, plus it has many other features.

Also, there is a program called Eppie Desktop which enables you to customize the start button using any bitmap you chosse. you could create a small bitmap saying, "Hello" or "start" and use it on the start buttom.
the whole program is only about 40k and it's very cool.
after downloading it, simply unzip it to c:\windows\system using winzip, or PKzip
, and then in "Control Panel" you will see an icon, "Eppie Desktop" open it up and select the bmp you created, press "ok" and then your bitmap should be on the start button. you can customise other buttons too.

You guys--you could have saved the hassle of all these posts by doing a simple search on the site with keywords "Change Start button"
You can change the bitmap, the wording, AND the bubble help by patching explorer.exe directly--of course, that means you do need two 3rd party programs (a hex editor and an icon editor--both of which should be in any user's library of tools) to do that--but once it's done, it's stand-alone.

..sort order of messages, nowadays...
A bit of reply. A hex editor is an advanced toy. Anyone that has started with computers after '95 might find the language hard to handle. I do. And yes, tclock needs to be running, but you get a lot more, like no text, any size, flat task switch, flat button etc...
Also, Resource Hacker does a one time trick to the file, so serves the same purpose.

What you say about Resource Hacker is true--I guess the point I'm trying to make is that the fix requires SOME kind of 3rd party app--but if I had to choose between one which has to be resident and one which lets you change the source code directly, I'd vote unhesitatingly for the latter!
