Hello, another post for you to ponder :P

I have used XP on this computer in the past but due to some bugs (on my part) i had to format and reinstall... but when i reinstalled XP wouldn't boot up. it would get through the boot screen but then it would just be black. I thought this might be a problem with the XP CD that i have, but i've tried SEVERAL copies of XP and they all did the same thing. I decided to settle for 2000 but that didn't work either! After more attempts at both ME and NT, neither of those would install.

Windows 98 installs just fine, I don't know why. Linux installs fine and runs fine as well. What gives? Someone suggested that it could be my RAM gone bad, but if so then why would 98 install and not ANY OTHER DISTRIBUTION? I haven't tried 95 yet and really don't want to. :P

I really want to use XP. 98 is a *******. please help

After boot the screen goes black .

Windows 98 is older so it might be that the other's install
the driver for your video card. Might just be that 98 uses
the standard vga driver and bypasses that. Linux does not enable 3d acceleration on my nvidia card either. Not after install that is. So perhaps it might be a faulty video card .

The other thing i would check is your bios settings . Or just use the safe settings. Win 2000 and xp gave me a lot of hassle because i had both apm and acpi enabled. After turning apm of it all worked fine.

There's always basic troubleshooting, unplug it all except for the basics. Power, mobo, mem , video, and build it back up 1 by 1. Unless its one of these.

Have fun
