The problem with my IE 6 SP1 is that it doesn't show the 'Repair' option in the Add-Remove programs. It only allows uninstallation. Moreover it shows up as a hotfix number and not as IE. What should I do? HELP :(

IE6 doesn't have a repair option like 5 and prior did. If you need to repair it click here

If you're using XP their won't be a repair option because IE 6 is installed with the OS. If you install IE 6 sp1 on 2k you should have the repair option, I do.

This is the message which I get when I click on the 'Change/Remove' button from my 'Add/Remove programs'.

"This program uninstalls Q832894 and restores your previous configuration. Do you want to uninstall Q832894?"

What should I do? There is still no repair option in sight.

Q832894 is only a patch for IE 6 sp1. You need to look for "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1" in add remove programs. I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything but are you sure you're using IE 6?
If you are their are other ways to try and repair it.
Repairing/Adding Components to IE6
Added 11/23/02

To repair (or add features to IE6)

Make sure you have the source files from the same location they were installed
Do a Start / Run / rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance
You will then be given the options to Add a Component or Repair
If you want to download the full install version of IE6 try this.
First, download the IE6 SP1 setup program from Microsoft. The full IE package might go as high as ~44mb depending upon your selection). This tip will let you customize the d/l parameters.

Go to the folder where you've placed the above file. Open a Command Prompt (CMD) in that folder, then run the following command in the CMD window:

ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"""

Note: Just copy and paste the above line so you get the syntax correct.
You can also choose to download all IE versions in one go. For example, if you choose to download the version for Win9X, the version for NT, the version for W2K, and the version for Win ME - all the files will go to one location - a folder named "Windows Update Setup Files" - and you can then burn this folder to a CD and use it to install IE on any OS version you want.

Hey thanks,
And I don't think that you're a jerk AT ALL. You're trying to solve my problem :)

Yes I do use IE 6 SP1. I will let you know the correct version if you want. I tried finding the 'Microsoft Internet Explorer' entry in the 'Add/Remove Program' but the IE icon appears only once in front of the hotfix. That's it :(

Secondly are you sure Microsoft allows a full download of the set.exe file? Coz I always thought they install directly to your machine. Please can you send me the URL from where I can d/l the file from? thanks :D

My second problem is that I DO NOT have the source files :( Since I am just a designer, I would not know the nitty gritties of saving one. I used to go to the Windows update page and click d/l as required.

My logic behind repairing IE was that over the last few days, I have been unable to use the Search bar. Now, as I am finding out, I have a new problem bein solved. :) Thanks a million.

Microsoft will let you download the full version. You just can't redistribute it,lol. If you go here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp Windows update. On the right hand side select go and on the next screen you should be able to download the IE6 setup file. Normally when you run that the files needed for installation are downloaded to a folder on your PC. Something like "windows update files" Those are what's referred to as the source files. The actual install is run from there. You probably have them you just didn't know it. Inside the folder is a read-me that says "this folder is safe to delete". LOL it is once you have installed IE6.
Now if you copy the setup file to a folder of your choice and run command I posted you can download all the files without running the install. I burn them to a cd and install from the cd. It's a lot quicker than Windows Update. You can download all the patches and service packs too. I do it this way.
Go to Windows Update, then click "Personalize Windows Update,"
put a checkmark in "Show link to Windows Update Catalog under See Also," then click Save Settings.
Now on the left there's a Windows Update Catalog link that gets you direct access to most patches and updates.
Hope this helps.

Hey thanks Dude,
You're a powerhouse of knowledge you know :D
I did exactly the way you told me too i.e. to repair from the RUN command. Unfortunately it did not ask me to add any new component and my problem, that of the Search bar giving me an error, still remains.

I am trying to procure a CD of IE6 SP1. Let's see how it works. BTW I also found the Windows Update folder and it contains some strange BM files. I did not find any setup files as you said. :D

Ok, I thought it was worth a try, I have never had to try it. Not sure about the folder, I have seen it before but I'm not sure about what it was named. I installed IE6 from my backup harddrive so I don't have that folder now. You could download IE6sp1 and run the install from your harddrive if you don't have a burner. If you have any of those CD's that come with PC magazines you may already have IE on cd. A lot of them include the full IE install files.
