Hi...first time here so sorry if this is long but I want to get this right. I have dug back in the posts and think I have it understood but knowing me...it's **** about somewhere...
I currently have a w98 machine using a Belkin 4 port usb hub (joystick, camera, scanner and ... ) that hosts a connection to the NT1 modem I'm using with our isdn (adsl unavailable).
I plan to give this machine (minus the hub) to my son, and will be buying a laptop (XP Pro) that will host the isdn connection.
To give him internet access my understanding is this (using a swapover cable)
Ensure both machines have unique names.
Add them to the same Workgroup.
On the 98 machine (it has a nic) - enable Client for Microsoft Networking. Add tcp/ip. Assign an ip of 192.168.0.2 with a subnet of 255 x 3. In gateway have 192.168.0.1
On the new XP Pro machine - as above but make the ip 192.168.0.1
So far on track yep?? Do I have to run any ICS on the 98 or anything on the XP Pro further to this?
For me to see his folders and vice versa I need to add ipx/spx protocol to both machines? Also File/Printer sharing services so as he can access my printer?
Presuming I'm on track, and with me understanding that he'll only be able to have this net access if the laptop is at home and turned on (it will be 98% of the time), if I need to travel with it, under that circumstance, what is the best solution to allow him to still be able to access the net?
Should I invest in a router or something? Expense is a concern and so is the KISS theory.
Would it just be simpler to have another isdn outlet installed in his room for when the laptop is unavailable?
Appreciate your help and if more info is needed, please ask.
Thanks
Kim
