How can I find out what is the fastest processor that can be fitted to my motherboard? I do not how to find out which motherboard I have installed. All I know is that my machine is a PC World Advent 8650 with a 450MHz Pentium II MMX purchased in Oct 1998 which has not been previously upgraded other than with a better graphics card.

given that it's a 450mhz from 1998, chances are you can't get anything to fit it these days.

anyway, i'm not sure if you can find out what motherboard it is by looking at something, but for now i can suggest you try searching the net to find out the specs of your comp, and then search for the specs of the motherboard in your comp.

Pentium II's use the Slot-A mounting style, and the 450 is the fastest P2 you can get.

Anything higher gets into the P3s.
Some P3s used the same "Card-style" mounting while others used the ZIF socket. /images/forums/icons/crazy.gif

You know why they called it Windows?
Because as soon as it opens, all the bugs get in.

not true, they made a 1.1ghz PII but they had to use a high powered fan to keep it from melting. :D

Yeah and shrek is based on on a true story.

Depending on your motherboard you should be able to upgrade it with a pentium 3. It depends on the maximum multiplyer the board can deliver. A pentium 3 with a 100 mhz fsb was made in slot 1 and socket 370 versions. For the slot 1 there are convertor cards available. Example a p3 800 E is 8 (mp) x 100 (fsb) . Versions ending with B are 133 fsb. These cpu 's are hard to find but if your lucky it's a cheap upgrade.
