I have tried this tweak several times and it does not work. I have manually altered the registry to insure that the value is set up correctly (DWORD). Where else does MS bury this? I just get tired of seeing "Click here to begin". Where else would I click?

You wouldn't happen to be referring to the Start button tooltip would you? Cause the only sure way to change it is resource hacking.
First, download this: VBProg (http://www.users.on.net/johnson/resourcehacker>http://www.users.on.net/johnson/resourcehacker</a>

OK. I'm not sure what to do with the registry. I went to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\System
I have NoDispCPL, NoDispSettingsPage, NoDispBackgroundPage, NoDispAppearancePage, etc. Do I need to enter a name called 'shell' and put in c:\windows\newexplorer.exe as the data? Thanks very much.

Yeah, create a new value called "Shell" and you don't need the whole path, just the EXE name will do (it's in a system folder, that's why it isn't necessary)

OK. I tried that and then re-booted. The machine made it to the desktop and opened explorer. However, all my started tasks (in startup) failed to execute. In short, it was not a complete boot but it did not BSOD or anything. Question: I noticed elsewhere on this site certain register entries like "[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
search for the value named Shell and make it equal to explorer1.exe." When I ran a search on my registry I found dozens of entries for explorer.exe. So...do I need to change all of those entries? Or just the registry entry above? Or delete explorer.exe and replace it with my edited file called explorer.exe. Sigh. I just love windows. Thanks.

You *can* replace the original explorer.exe, it's just a pain in the @$$, because of the Windows File Protection. It should work with just the one reg entry from eariler and the one you said, so change that one too and try it again.
<sarcasm> And yes, Windows is fun </sarcasm>
