For some reason scan reg is not on my laptop. I am blue screening caused by a corrupt reg key. Is there anywhere I can either download scanreg.exe so I can load it on floppy and launch? Or does anyone know of a way to restore my computer settings THROUGH DOS, to a few days ago?

Since there is no MS-DOS mode in WinXP there is no way to run scanreg.exe, therefore it doesn't exist.
Would booting to the WinXP CD and running Recovery Console help?

No luck. I still get the dump. I changed the boot options to boot to cd to the bios. I had the cd in there and nothing. Is there a way to run recovery console through dos? I say dos knowing there is none with xp. But I can get to the command prompt. I just dont want to format, and redo everything when all i need is a key reset. Theres gotta be something??

By the way, safe mode always stops loading right at the drivers\agp440.sys line. This is the third time i have seen this stopped on this line sinde last friday. Ugh, I am not going to take the easy way out and just wipe it!!! You know what I mean?

Some times it takes a while to go into safe mode. You should wait a least five minutes before taking the big plunge. One thing, if you can't start up with the CD boot disk how are you going to relaod your system. Try resetting your MB.

Very easily but also very unsufficient because i lose all my data. I boot with a start up disk with cd support. Then throw the cd in and launch away

There certainly is DOS in Windows XP. Though DOS is no longer a part of the OS, it is an add-on program, reached through the Recovery Console on the XP CD, or 6 boot floppies if you have an OEM version of the XP OS. If you can post back and tell me whether or not you can reach Recovery Console, select r for repair, and achieve a C:\Windows command line prompt, we'll take the next step. But if you can get a C:\Windows prompt, you have a 95% chance of getting everything back the way it was.
1) There is no dos in XP. You can get to a command line that simulates a dos environmnet (ie, the RC), but that's as close as it comes
2) Back to the original problem. First of all, what is the error message you get? Second, let's stop the dumps & reboots.... Go to System Properties - Advanced Tab - Startup and Recovery settings and make two changes:
Where it says "Write Debugging Information" change the setting to none
UNcheck "Automatically Restart"
Again, we need to know the exact error message you see.

There is DOS in XP. If you want to call it a simulation, go right ahead, but I'm pretty confident I know more about this issue than you do. And I've used it to fix a dozen of these problems from the command line. Period. This fellow has a corrupted registry, and with careful typing of commands in a 4-step process we can get him up and running again.
XP is built on the NT kernel, not the DOS kernel. There is no dos layer in XP. Period.
But if it makes you feel any better, I'm sure you know more than I about any number of things.

If you had read my original post carefully, you would have seen that I made no claim that DOS is a part of the XP operating system. You are stating the obvious here, Allen. DOS is an ADD-ON PROGRAM in XP, as I clearly stated, but with almost all of the familiar commands, including the ability to execute batch files. Why argue over what to call it? It's there, and it's very useful, especially for machines whose registries are corrupted to the extent that the computer cannot boot into windows.
DOS is not a program, add-on or otherwise. It is an operating system. But clearly I'm going to be wrong and you're going to be right. So why don't we just leave it alone and try to help the original poster?

Well, that was certainly the intent, but he seems to have disappeared. So, I shall do the same. You know, Allen, Microsoft Knowledge Base Article Q279118 (and there are others, but I just can't remember what they are) refers to the Windows XP command prompt as the "MS-DOS Prompt," and it also refers to the Windows XP "MS-DOS Subsystem." I'm not saying they're right, I'm just offering it for your consideration. Sorry to have riled you up.
