View Full Version : Can't connect to the internet

I wake up one morning and my PC is fine. Get back from classes, run AVG, adaware, spybot, and CWshredder to get rid of my hijacked homepage, reinstall WMP because it quit working, and with AVG found a virus called downloader.esepora.k. I reboot and I can't connect to the net anymore. No clue why I can't. My internet works because I hook my laptop up straight to it and it's fine. I'm on a college network. I also a few days ago set up a wireless router. Uniden. After I started getting the problem I unhooked it though, thinking it could be the problem, but I don't think it is. Dunno if the router or the trojan or something else could have screwed up my settings? My computer still responds when I unplug the ethernet cable or plug it in. Just no activity. Things I've done to try and solve the problem:

#1. Repair LAC - get error msg (Cannot renew ip)
#2. goto cmd. ipconfig /renew - get error msg (Similar to above, says it timed out.)
#3. Running a program called LSPFix (Didn't fix anything)
#4. Go into admin tools> services> dhcp client> set to automatic and start it (These settings were already correct)
#5. Get the IP, Gateway, router, and DNS addresses from my laptop, and hard coded them into the tcp/ip settings of my desktop's ethernet card. (Didn't work. It only took longer to realize it didn't work when looking up homepages.)

I'm clueless on what to do next. I'm thinking reformat, just don't want to have to go that far. Anyone got any suggestions?

well, yeah, sounds kinda fishy with regards to the trojan/router install occuring around the same time. does your laptop have any connectivity problems thru the router? also, have you tried pinging any ip addresses yet?

Make sure all cables used are ok .
Reinstall the nic driver, and tcp/ip protocol.
Turn of the xp firewall.

Compare settings with your laptop perhaps.

good luck

Network interface card or ethernet card . If i am not mistaken this should work. I am not using xp so from memory. Right click on "my computer" then "properties".
In the hardware tab click on device manager. Or installed hardware or devices it's called something like that in xp. So then you get a list of all the devices installed . Find the network adapter and just delete it.
Now after rebooting xp should tell you it found new hardware and reinstall the card. Xp also has this wizard for setting up a internet connection .

Hopefully this also reinstalls the tcp/ip .

Did you try to setup the internet using the wizard ?

http://www.redbird.net/redbird/setup_winxp.htm

Now as to reinstalling the tcp/ip

and

http://www.globetechnology.com/servlet/ArticleNews/tech/RTGAM/20021003/gts1/Technology/techBN/

hope it helps

The problem is called "corrupt tcp/ip stack ".
Seems to be caused by spyware or the uninstalling of it . I prefer to call it getting rid of creepy software i did not ask for or want. "Guys, there is a easy fix for that. start > run > netsh int ip reset blah.log" . Taken from the last website. Your problem with the changing
homepage can be fixed with spybot S&D. Download the latest updates . Immunize tab scroll down and lock the ie start page.

I've tried the netsh int ip reset blah.log command before but I tried it again. Didn't work. I also tried what the forum said about installing tcp/ip again and pointing the disk to /windows/inf. that didn't work either =(

Shoot, and i thought that was it.
Maybe it's an idea to rule out hardware failure.
Either by changing the nic or a bootup flop with network
options.

This link is for a little program that displays the network rather well. Hope it is of some help.
http://www.kaboodle.org/
The zipped file fits on a floppy.

I'll edit this post if i find a bootup flop that can do the trick.

I got kaboodle and ran it..don't know what I'm suppose to do with it though...shows

My Services - VNC - VPN - File Transfer - Web config
My PCs - PCNAME

and what is the bootable floppy suppose to do?

With kaboodle you can double click on the pcname. This will give you a bit of information about the ip and network , if there .

With a bootable flop that supports networking you bypass winxp. If you are able to startup the tcp/ip
and the nic driver with the floppy then it's not a hardware error. No point in reinstalling xp if it is.
Another option is just to swap the nic , if available.

I did try the modboot floppy and it worked here.

ok i made the bootable disk and ran it. It came up saying "PCI detection has not found a listed PCI adapter. Switching to manual" then I had a list of drivers, and none of them were my ethernet card's drivers, so it ended up saying that it failed to load the drivers.

Do you know which ethernetcard you have ?
http://members.datafast.net.au/dft0802/downloads.htm
With this you can detect it.

Then from the list at
http://www.nu2.nu/bootdisk/network/
download the driver and put it in A:\lib\ndis.

Did Kaboodle come up with anything ? All we are trying here is finding out if the nic is ok . With a program that will fit on a floppy. I do have a bit of time so i will see if i can find something more about your problem. A bit of extra information on your system might help.

from a german forum
http://gengunhed.no-ip.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=520
the interesting part is in english and talks about physically removing the nic. Turns out the poster "in german" changed some bios settings. After putting them back to fail safe the problem was solved.

I finally got the program figured out. It was Sygate firewall. I wouldn't even have the thing running, but it was still somehow screwing up my settings. It's uninstalled and my internet is now working again. Thank you so much for everyone who took the time to help me, I really appreciate it.
