Dial up connection lost details (WXP-Pro)

All of a sudden, my Dial up connection to my ISP has lost its username and password details, and even clicking "save" does not retain them. I've already tried deleting the connection and re creating it under another name - but to no avail! Any ideas?

When you recreated it, did it ask you to input username and password?

Of course! lol.. One additional thing I have found though. I've created a short cut to the connection on the desktop, and if I use that to dial up the internet, everything is fine. However, if I start Outlook Express 6, which uses the same connection to retrieve e-mail - it dials with blank details. Then the next time I use the desktop link, the details have gone again. I seem to remember reading an article about a Protected Storage profile key in the registry when Outlook loses its POP3 password - I wonder if the two problems are related?
